SYNOPSIS:
"She was quite a ballsy broad," director Schumacher says of Veronica Guerin, the Irish crime reporter who was shot and killed in Dublin in 1996 when her investigations got too close to exposing drug lord John Gilligan (McSorley). "She was flirtatious and seductive, in the sense that [she] wanted to get people to open up and spill the beans." Blanchett found it fascinating to play "a journalist who began covering a story and then became the story," she says. "She couldn't stop until she had removed the problem and extricated herself from what she was writing about, which, unfortunately, never happened." Shot for less than $15 million in 93 locations in and around Dublin, the film retains a handheld feel, although "it's not as gritty as Tigerland," says Schumacher, who roped in that film's star, Colin Farrell, for a cameo as "a guy on the street who tries to pick her up."
Hollywood Reporter: Playing Guerin gave Blanchett a new appreciation for the press. "It was interesting to be on the other side," she says with a laugh. "I think she had very real connections with people. At the same time, she wasn't a saint. What journalist is, really?"
