SYNOPSIS: Hopkins remembers his reaction when producer Dino De Laurentiis approached him about playing Hannibal Lecter for a third time: "I said I'd like to do it only if I can play him really dangerous, so that if he broke through the glass, he would just create mayhem." Based on Thomas Harris's eponymous novel (which is also the basis for 1986's Manhunter), this prequel to The Silence of the Lambs shows how everyone's favorite other-white-meat-eater was originally captured (by FBI agent Will Graham, played by Norton). Graham later goes to see Lecter for help as he tries to understand the mind of another psycho killer, the Tooth Fairy (Fiennes). "It was emotionally exhausting," says Ratner (The Family Man, the Rush Hour movies) of directing his high-octane cast, "because every person has a different method. On those days [when I worked with all of them], I would get yelled at at least two or three times a day by the actors." But there were plenty of looser moments too, underscored by Ratner's habit of inviting scores of people to the set to watch the filming. "I thought [that] was terrific," says Hopkins. "I like people who are accessible, instead of these uptight, neurotic directors who think they're creating a cure for cancer or something."
