The Premiere 2007 Preview
Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer
Starring: Ioan Gruffudd, Jessica Alba, Chris Evans, Michael Chiklis, Julian McMahon, and Andre Braugher
Directed by: Tim Story
(20th Century Fox Distribution, June 15)
The sequel pits the Four against the Silver Surfer — think Terminator 2's liquid-metal man on a flying longboard — an intergalactic enigma who has come to prepare earth for its destruction. Although the Surfer is a favorite in the comics because of his soliloquizing, he'll mainly be a spaceman of action onscreen. (The character is being animated by Peter Jackson's Weta Digital using the latest version of the motion-capture technology employed for Gollum and King Kong.) "The movie is about the Surfer's interaction with our world," says producer Avi Arad. "Not only the Fantastic Four, but the military, Dr. Doom, the man on the street. We attack him, but he realizes, in a biblical sense, that this world deserves saving." Meanwhile, our heroes — especially Evans's hotshot Johnny Storm — realize that teamwork takes, well, work. "[The writers] have done a good job of listening to where people felt the characters had room to grow," says Evans. "It's nice for Johnny to learn his lesson and grow up a bit from being this solo act. But he's still Johnny, you know?" Click here to read Premiere's review of the first Fantastic Four.
