(Universal Pictures Distribution, July 20)
When the wife of Brooklyn firefighter Larry (James) unexpectedly passes away before signing the couple's life insurance forms, he's faced with raising two kids with no extra money for a year. Told his situation could be fixed if he were to remarry, Larry discovers that prospects for a shlubby single dad are few. Finally, his friend and fellow firefighter Chuck (Sandler) reluctantly pretends they are in a gay relationship so that Larry can qualify for domestic partner benefits. It may sound far-fetched, but it isn't. "The idea came from a widowed fireman in New Jersey who did something similar when his insurance paperwork got caught up in Kafkaesque bureaucracy," says director Dugan (The Benchwarmers). Says James, "I'm more the guy worried about money and taking care of the kids, while [Chuck is] more interested in hanging out with the ladies." Is that another way of saying he's got the role of the fretful wife? "Exactly. Although we all know that Sandler's gonna be the woman in the relationship, so don't mix that up."
