The Premiere 2007 Preview
Sicko
Directed by: Michael Moore
(Release TBD)
"I pitched this to Harvey and Bob [Weinstein] as a comedy," says Moore (Fahrenheit 9/11, Bowling for Columbine) about his latest documentary, which skewers the U.S. health-care system. "You're laughing because otherwise you'd be crying: Reading these stories of people who were going to die because the insurance company wouldn't pay for the operation, or they couldn't afford the drugs... it's a very sad thing." Moore and his staff fielded almost 25,000 letters from Americans describing their medical-care debacles before setting out to talk to the corporate giants themselves. Already on the alert, Pfizer set up a hotline to keep tabs on his whereabouts, Moore says; another company hired a psychological profiler to help thwart him. "Basically, what the psychologist determined is the way to get me off the subject is to bring up any Detroit sports team. I thought, that person's good." Moore even took the proactive camouflaging measure of dropping more than 60 pounds. "I thought, Jeez, the best disguise would be to take care of myself."
