The Premiere 2007 Preview
I Think I Love My Wife
Starring: Chris Rock, Gina Torres, and Kerry Washington
Directed by: Chris Rock
(Fox Searchlight, March 16)
"I wanted to play what I am — married, 40, two kids," Rock says about this loose remake of Eric Rohmer's Chloe in the Afternoon. "And I don't think anybody was going to cast me as that." So he and his frequent collaborator Louis C.K. (HBO's Lucky Louie) rewrote the story of a man who's tempted to stray from his wife (Torres) by a friend's ex-mistress (Washington). "We poured comedy over this dramatic premise," says Rock, who also directed Head of State. The actresses read for both female characters, but Torres, known for her butt-kicking roles in Serenity and TV's Alias, says she feels "Chris ultimately decided on me for the wife because I am a wife. It's wonderful, given my résumé, to play the woman who's the softer voice of reason as opposed to the vampy ho. Not that I wouldn't have loved playing a vampy ho. There's plenty of merit in doing that."
