Waking Up in Reno
Release Date: October 25, 2002
Starring: Billy Bob Thornton, Natasha Richardson, Patrick Swayze, Charlize Theron, Dennis Quaid
Directed by: Jordan Brady

An amiable—if slight—contemporary comedy of redneck manners, Waking Up in Reno features Billy Bob Thornton, Natasha Richardson, Charlize Theron, and Patrick Swayze as a pair of Arkansas couples who are trekking to the title city to see, among other things, a monster truck show. Thornton's the punctilious, miserly auto dealer; Richardson is his insecure, disempowered wife; Swayze's the dumb nice guy everybody takes advantage of; and Theron is (surprise, surprise) the li'l firecracker who improbably married him. Their journey west, via SUV, is marked by several revelations, including Theron's affair with Thornton (which the audience is already clued in on). Does hilarity ensue? Not quite. A few zingers aside (Thornton's analogy of wife-swapping and car-trading is pretty funny), the writing is indifferent, and Jordan Brady's direction is prosaic. But the cast does what they can, and if you've ever gotten any pleasure from these performers before, you could get some here, provided you're not expecting too much.
