GLENN KENNY'S MOVIE REVIEW (posted 6/5/06)
As an individual whose own nuptials will have just occurred as you read this, and hence is in a constant state of almost-mental-breakdown-inducing distraction, I expected—no, actually hoped, really—to get a bigger kick out of this picture about three couples competing in a bride’s magazine’s contest for most original wedding. Because I can, you know, relate. As it happened, I found about 4 of its 90 minutes eminently relatable, which could just mean that my future spouse and I are saner than most soon-to-be newlyweds, and I suppose I should be grateful. Despite some engaging cast members—especially reliable shlub Martin Freeman (of Shaun of the Dead and the BBC’s The Office) as one half of a couple whose wedding theme is “Hollywood musical”—the wackiness of this multicharacter fake doc is often pretty strained, ultimately proving that while doing a wedding is hard, successfully emulating a Christopher Guest–style comedy is way, way harder. —Glenn Kenny
