Rumor Has It ...
Jennifer Aniston uncovers family ties to The Graduate in Rumor Has It.

By Ryan Devlin

Starring Jennifer Aniston, Kevin Costner, Shirley MacLaine, and Mark Ruffalo
Directed by Rob Reiner (Warner Bros.)

What’s that you say, Mrs. Robinson—you’re my grandmother? So goes the basic idea behind Reiner’s latest film, about a journalist named Sarah (Aniston) who puts her wedding plans on hold to investigate a claim that her family may have been the inspiration for The Graduate. Much to her surprise, Sarah’s quest leads her to an Internet millionaire (Costner) who bedded both her grandmother (MacLaine) and mother (now rolling in her grave). “It’s kind of a reverse parallel. Here, you have the Ben character falling for a younger woman,” says Reiner, who cautions that this isn’t a sequel to the 1967 classic. The movie borrows just as heavily from tales told in real-life Pasadena, the home of screenwriter Ted Griffin. “As a kid, he’d always heard rumors that the book and the film were based on a real family there,” Reiner explains. In any case, here’s to you, Anne Bancroft. —Ryan Devlin
