All the King's Pitiful Box Office Returns
Steven Zaillian's star-studded remake of the 1949 Best Picture winner flopped about the domestic box office like a beached whale this weekend, gasping to a miserable $3.8 million gross on 1,514 screens. The weekend's big winners were Johnny Knoxville's testicles, proving their dominance and willingness to take unimaginable amounts of abuse in exchange for a $28 million take for Jackass: Number Two. Jet Li's final action outing, Fearless, had a respectably unafraid opening of $10 million. More at Variety.
Opie vs. Tricky Dick
Ron Howard and Imagine Entertainment will bring the play Frost/Nixon, based on journalist David Frost's 1977 interviews with former president Richard Nixon, to the big screen after the production's West End and Broadway stints end. The play is currently at London's Donmar Warehouse, starring Frank Langella (Good Night, and Good Luck) as the late president and Michael Sheen (Underworld) as Frost. More at Variety.
Documentarian to Tackle Haditha Killings
Filmmaker Nick Broomfield (Aileen: Life and Death of a Serial Killer) plans to dramatize last year's deaths of 24 Iraqi civilians in the western city of Haditha, allegedly at the hands of U.S. Marines, for his next project. The director, who has interviewed some of the Marines from the involved unit, says he will use dramatic recreation of the events rather than documentary techniques and plans to begin filming next year in Jordan. British broadcaster Channel Four will finance in part. More at the Hollywood Reporter.
Everybody, Everywhere Loves Johnny Depp
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest pulled in another $7 million at the international box office over the weekend, bringing its worldwide total since July to $1.045 billion, or just short of the gross domestic product of Canada. Some international tabloids began reporting over the weekend that Keith Richards was drunk while filming his cameo in the series' third installment, tentatively titled Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End. In related news, sky still blue, sun rises in east. More at the Hollywood Reporter.
