Last Chance: 5 Summer Movies You Don't Want to Miss! Premiere Editors Make Their Picks.
Premiere's Last-Gasp-o'-Summer, Don't-Miss-'Em Movies
It's Labor Day weekend, that annual 72-hour last-ditch marathon of staving off “what I should have done this summer” regret. Well, we don't want you to walk away from the 2006 popcorn movie season without seeing these five under-the-radar films, picks from Premiere's editors. In no particular order …
1. The Proposition
At the time, Premiere.com's reviewer felt so-so about this brutal, atmospheric outback western penned by post-punk musician Nick Cave and starring a stonily silent Guy Pearce. Managing editor Chris Cronis, on the other hand, thinks it's a winner: “It depicts a landscape both harsh and unforgiving yet oddly beautiful. The same cannot be said for the characters occupying this hell: an amoral outlaw capable of reciting poetry one moment and stoving in a man's skull the next; a lawman civilizing a land by forcing a brother to kill one of his own. The cast, which includes Pearce, John Hurt, Danny Huston, and the amazing Ray Winstone, is sublime, and the movie itself a complete original. But it's not for the squeamish.”
2. Hard Candy
Deputy editor Rachel Clarke gives this über-dark online-predator-preyed-on-by-teen-girl drama her hearty endorsement and calls it “rough” (and she means that in a good way). We know Candy isn't technically a summer movie, but we think this one's worth bending the rules for.

3. The Descent
Senior editor and resident movie critic Glenn Kenny is quick to mention this gory August horror film, which sinks six women on a spelunking adventure into a claustrophobic abyss infested with nasty beasties.
4. Snakes on a Plane
Over 80 percent of the Premiere.com readers gave it three stars or better, and Premiere.com editor Jessica Letkemann concurs. The blog buzz on this one was deafening, but it barely slithered by with $15 mil its opening weekend. Let's set the record straight: Yes, a movie about a badass Sam Jackson character battling, er, snakes on a, um, plane, sounds dumb, but it's actually a really funny and scary film.

5. Half Nelson
Executive editor Kathy Heintzelman thinks you should catch Ryan Gosling as a Brooklyn history teacher and drug addict. She doesn't hesitate to say that Gosling gives one of the best performances of the year.
