Movie News – August 30, 2006
Down and Dirty, Addicted, birthdays, and more.
Down and Dirty on the Big Screen Variety reports
that the rights to Down and Dirty Pictures, former Premiere executive editor Peter Biskind's tell-all book about the independent film industry in the 1990s, have been purchased by director Ken Bowser and writer Dean Craig, who intend to turn it into a film. "You couldn't make these guys up. They're like offensive linemen rampaging across the fields of Sundance sacking anyone who gets in their way, while the handsome movie star owner of the stadium smiles benevolently down on his charges. If that's not a movie, I don't know what is," Bowser told Variety. Coming soon: bets on who plays Harvey Weinstein.
Gellar Gets Addicted
In apparent attempt to corner the market on Asian horror film remakes, Sarah Michelle Gellar has signed on to play a woman whose husband and brother-in-law switch identities after waking from comas in Addicted, according to the Hollywood Reporter. The film is adapted from the 2002 South Korean shocker Jungdok.
Promises, Promises
French actor Vincent Cassel (Derailed, Ocean's Twelve) will join Naomi Watts in David Cronenberg's Eastern Promises. The film centers on a nurse (Watts) who becomes involved in uncovering the identity of a Russian prostitute who dies in childbirth. Cassel will play a Russian whose family owns a London brothel. More at The Hollywood Reporter.
Birthdays
Cameron Diaz is 34. "The Thing" and star of TV's The Shield Michael Chiklis is 43, and versatile character actor David Paymer is 52.
