Bertolucci Uncut and Lord of the Rings rules over them all
BREAK OUT THE ID
Bernardo Bertolucci fans gave breath a sigh of relief. Fox Searchlight Pictures has decided to release Bertolucci's new film, The Dreamer, in February uncut and rated NC-17. Fox Searchlight's decision marks the first time in six years that a major film studio has distributed an NC-17 film.
Set against the political backdrop of France in the spring of 1968, the film centers on the relationship of three students played by Eva Green, Louis Garrel and Michael Pitt. Left alone while their parents are on holiday, Isabelle (Green) and her brother Theo (Garrel) invite Matthew (Pitt), a young American, to stay at their apartment. There, they make their own rules as they experiment with their emotions and sexuality while playing a series of increasingly demanding mind games.
REVERSAL OF FORTUNE
New Line Cinema's The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King is box office champ for the 4th week in a row. Early estimates placed Tim Burton's Big Fish ahead of the final chapter of Peter Jackson's triology by as little as $400,000. However, final tallies on Monday found LOTR had no trouble slaying the competition with $14.5 million in weekend receipts. Big Fish settled in the number 2 spot with ony $13.8 milion.
It wasn't the only adjustment. Another Columbia offering, Something's Gotta Give, slipped from Sunday's No. 4 ranking to No. 5, with $7.7 million. Miramax's Cold Mountain moved up to take its place at No. 4 with $7.8 mil is weekend receipts.
