Ask Glenn, February 2006
What movie features high school monsters who challenge the students to a game of basketball that will decide the fate of the world? Glenn Kenny knows.

By Glenn Kenny

Q: I saw this movie on late-night TV a number of years ago. It involved a high school that becomes overrun by monsters. One teen was eaten by a monster that was in his shoes after he dried the sneakers in the microwave. The end involved a basketball game between students and monsters to decide the fate of the world, including a particularly long buzzer shot. I believe the movie was narrated by a talking basketball from outer space. —Patrick, via e-mail

A: I’ll be honest—when I read this e-mail I thought, “Wow, the crystal meth problem in this country is worse than I thought.” The very idea of such a film seemed so preposterous I thought I’d throw the question out to the readership. But along the way to print, an industrious colleague discovered that the picture in question is 1989’s Monster High, which, as it happens, was recently released on DVD by Sony. I won’t be checking it out, as movies narrated by basketballs really aren’t my bag.
