2008 Movie Preview

Star Trek XI
Starring: Eric Bana, Chris Pine, Winona Ryder, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, John Cho, Simon Pegg, Anton Yelchin, Bruce Greenwood
Directed by: J.J. Abrams
Release date: December 25, 2008

The Plot: Although under wraps more than Imhotep, we do know that J.J. Abrams is tackling the early years of the Enterprise crew — so we're seeing young Kirk, Spock, Uhura, Sulu, Bones, Scotty, and Chekov as they graduate from the Starfleet Academy and enter the "real world" full of idealistic notions of boldly going places.

The Pros: If any franchise needs a reboot and some new blood, it's this one. Abrams has the geek cred to get it done, and so far the casting is really intriguing. Simon Pegg as Scotty? Brilliant.

The Cons: Does anyone apart from the hardcore fans want Star Trek: The College Years? Come to think of it, do even the hardcore fans want that? And do they really expect to keep Shatner away from this project? One "wink wink" cameo could sink the whole endeavor.

Cheat Sheet:

  • Yes, you read that right — Winona Ryder has been cast as Amanda Grayson, the human mother of Mr. Spock. Aussie star Eric Bana stars as new villain named Nero.
  • Although it does not have an official title yet, the film is being referred to as Star Trek XI on its web site.
  • Character actor Bruce Greenwood stars as Captain Pike, known to Star Trek fans as the first captain of the U.S.S. Enterprise. (Actor Jeffrey Hunter played Pike in the pilot episode of the original TV series, before the character was replaced by William Shatner's Captain Kirk for the rest of the show's run.)
  • The only original cast member slated to show up in the new film is Leonard Nimoy, and he will be playing Spock — leading some to speculate about some sort of time travel/vision of the future involving him and Zachary Quinto (who plays young Spock).
