Jason Bateman on fatherhood: I am operating from sort of an advantage of ignorance because [my daughter] is only ten months old, but I am hoping that my plan of just trying to give her a good enough decision-making device up top will suffice. I mean that is probably a bit idealistic and pie-in-the-sky and head-in-the-sand, but you cannot keep them in a box their whole lives and be with them at every moment. And there are many, many decisions that they are going to have to make on their own. And so, while she is around, I am just going to make her as smart as I possibly can, so that she makes the right decisions. My parents did a pretty good job with me and my sister [actress Justine Bateman], yet we still make a bunch of bad decisions and end up getting hurt or getting arrested. It is gonna happen. And so, like, when I eventually did try drugs it was after a few years of: "I know this is going to be tempting. And I know this is going to be bad. And I know I can develop a habit. So let's wait. Let's wait until I really can handle it if it is really good." So at least I had that decision made properly. So I hope that I give her at least that moment.

ON ELLEN PAGE

"I knew this girl. She had this crazy freak-out because she took too many behavioral meds at once. And she just, like, ripped off her clothes and dove into the fountain at Ridgdale Mall and was like: "Blah! I am a Kraken from the sea." — Juno MacGuff

"I heard that was you." — Su-Chin

Jason Bateman: She is just very easy to love. She gives actresses a good name in that she is not really one. She doesn't do a whole lot of acting. She kind of just says her lines and doesn't really confuse it with a whole lot of precious obnoxious technique. At least it is not visible. She is pretty similar in real life in that there is not a lot of pretense there. I really like that about her.

Jason Reitman: It isn't about finding the funniest actor. It is about finding someone who knows how to be honest on screen. And when I looked at Hard Candy I thought: "Wow. This girl's really in control, she can turn on a dime. There is a cleverness to the way that she does anything. She is really sharp and wise beyond her years." And when I met her, I found all that warmth, what makes her so sweet. This is Juno. When I watch her work, it is like seeing Jodie Foster in Taxi Driver. I think she has an incredibly promising career. I think she is fearless. She is sharp. She emotionally connects with the character in a way that I have never seen before. I have only made two movies, but gotten to work with some pretty great actors. No one holds a candle to Ellen Page. She is simply spectacular. There is an ease [in] working with her. I don't know how she does it so easily. She deserves an Oscar nomination. I really hope she gets it. She's that good. I cannot wait to work with her again.
