How scripted was Hot Fuzz, and how much room do you leave for spur-of-the-moment stuff?
EDGAR: What we tend to do — I know there's definitely a school now with, like, the Judd Apatow films, where they kind of riff endlessly. But they have more luxurious schedules to kind of allow for that. We don't really have the time to do lots of riffing or do alternative takes. So what we do is, me and Simon write the script, and then we rehearse with the actors. Not on the set, we have proper rehearsals two weeks before. And then any good stuff that comes out of that, we incorporate into the script. On Shaun of the Dead, there were one or two scenes where Nick was saying a different line each take. On Hot Fuzz there was nothing like that; it was all completely scripted. But because we've rehearsed it and because Simon and Nick are best friends in real life, it automatically has that kind of naturalistic chemistry.

NICK: That Supercop bit, that was it.

EDGAR: Oh yeah. There's one bit, it's in the outtakes…barely any of it's in the film, actually, only the line that was scripted is in the film, but just Nick reading the back of the Supercop DVD, which was funny.

Nick, how much involvement do you have at the script stage?
NICK: Well, you know, we're mates so…nothing. [Both laugh.] But I'm always around and stuff, and I'll get in little bits and pieces here and there. But usually I'm the first person to get the script, and then we'll have a week together, the three of us, primarily going through [Nick's character] Danny and things Danny says, but then, we've been together a long time, I kind of feel like I am allowed to have a little bit of a say over the whole thing. Especially on this film more than Shaun of the Dead, I felt like I was part of the creative team, which was important to me.

So is the next step that Simon becomes your foil in the next movie?
NICK: Well, Simon and I are writing a script now, which hopefully we'll shoot at the beginning of the year and we're gonna change things up a little bit.

Can you tell us what it's about?
NICK: Noooo.
