Look Who Talked — 'Roger and Me': The Lost Episode

Smith: You don't give back something you didn't get. As I say, the abatement —

Moore: But my point is, you got it under false pretenses —

Smith: No.

Moore: — when you promised the city council that you would retain 7,000 jobs. So the city council said, okay, then we'll give you a 50 percent tax break. And then four years later, you say thanks for the money and good-bye.

Smith: No, it doesn't work that way at all.

You have to understand that the taxes come over a period, and, as I say, as long as we had the project there, we were getting the abatement; when we don't have the project, we don't get the abatement. It's similar to having a 30-year mortgage on the house. When you sell the house, you sure don't keep making the mortgage payments, do you?

Moore: Roger, the point is that you have received over $1 billion worth of tax abatements just from the city of Flint in the last 11 years. In that same period, you have eliminated 30,000 jobs.

Are you going to give the money back to the people of Flint?

Smith: Let me tell you, you're way, way off in your numbers. If we worked there another hundred years, we might receive that. But we have no received anything like a billion dollars from the city of Flint.

I think you're a little — your time is up. Let me tell you. If you come and see us, we'll sit down and explain the numbers to you very carefully so you can understand. But I can tell you, we have not received anything like a billion dollars.
