Dan Aykroyd: Idol Chatter
How do you remember the glory days of The Blues Brothers and Ghostbusters?
Like being in battle—I mean, we had control of whole cities.
So when you landed more intimate fare like your Oscar-nominated performance opposite Jessica Tandy in Driving Miss Daisy, were you the picture of seen-it-all, done-it-all serenity?
Every time you walk on a set, every time you walk on a concert stage, every time you go in front of a radio mike, when they say “Rolling,” you still shit. But that’s why we do what we do, that’s why it’s like battle. You don’t know if you’re gonna wipe out or soar.
But Danny the Energizer Bunny just keeps on going. Still, do back-handed compliments such as Leonard Maltin’s “the multitalented Aykroyd has been wasted in more atrocious films than almost any screen contemporary of his skill and stature” hurt?
Caddyshack II, for instance! [laughs] No, I’ve never shed a tear over any of this business, ’cause it’s just business. And I love it. I mean, you can walk away with $50 million of a company’s money, make a film, and they won’t kill you. [laughs] You get second and third chances. And I still get thrilled every time I think about some of the things I’ve done and some of the things coming that I don’t even know about yet. I just knew I didn’t want to do any really serious workin life—I wanted to have fun. And that’s what I succeeded in doing. It’s all just been fun, fun, fun.
