Selma Blair heats things up as Liz Sherman in Hellboy

By Tim Swanson

Guillermo del Toro said you were the only actress he considered for Liz Sherman because you have “very sad eyes like Ingrid Bergman.”
God bless him. Yeah, I did not audition. He offered me the part. I think he had seen me in Storytelling, the Todd Solondz film.

Tell us about your fire-starting character.
She’s kind of a deer caught in the headlights. She doesn’t know how to make her next move because she doesn’t want to hurt anyone and she doesn’t want to hurt herself, which is a bit odd for me, because it’s an impossibility for me to sit still. Guillermo calls me “Monkey Brains” because I can’t talk and walk at the same time, apparently.

What was it like kissing Hellboy?
There were some awkward moments, like “Oh my God, am I kissing a stuffed animal?’” But I looked into his eyes and it was Ron Perlman. So it felt normal.
