Top 10 Movies of Summer 2003
Our annual summer preview ranks the ten films most likely to succeed at the box office.
1. The Matrix Reloaded
STARRING Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, Laurence Fishburne, Hugo Weaving, Jada Pinkett Smith, and Monica Bellucci; directed by Larry and Andy Wachowski (Warner Bros., May 15)
When The Matrix was released more than four years ago, no one expected the $171 million–grossing punch it would pack. This time around, writer-director siblings the Wachowskis are taking no chances. With two sequels, The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions (out November 7), a series of nine related animated shorts, and a video game all heading our way in the coming months, there won’t be anyone underestimating the power of the franchise. Nor will it be so easy for others to steal its dazzling moves, unlike last time, when “bullet time” turned up in all manner of commercials, videos, and movies, and was even parodied in Scary Movie and Shrek. Producer Joel Silver is happy to report that the sequel’s technology is so advanced and expensive that “they won’t be able to copy it.” More than two years in the making, with a total budget (for both sequels) in excess of $300 million, the film features even bigger and better fight and action sequences with “some good, solid, visceral crashing and concussion, as well as things that are impossible,” says Reeves, who returns as the messianic and even more gifted Neo. In this installment, Neo ventures back into the Matrix with Trinity (Moss) and Morpheus (Fishburne) to try to crack the titular computer system and free humanity from the machines, despite the best efforts of a coterie of new villains—including the terrible Twins (Neil and Adrian Rayment) and a sultry temptress (Bellucci). “There are characters who possess powers far beyond those of mortal men,” Fishburne says, such as Agent Smith (Weaving), now a multiple threat. Plus, we finally get to see what Zion, that human city deep down near the earth’s core, looks like. “It was a very beautiful set,” says Pinkett Smith, who joins the series as Niobe, a member of the human rebellion and former paramour of Morpheus. “Zion felt like a heartbeat, it was like the center of the soul, the spirit. Even shooting in there was like, ‘Wow.’ ”
THE BOTTOM LINE: Wow, indeed. Mind-blowing action, not to mention the geek effect, will make this the summer’s biggest blockbuster.
