The Movie: Face it, Schwarzen-what's-his-name and his action hero cronies are dinosaurs, and apart from Pierce Brosnan's Agent 007, there hasn't been a decent one-man army to save the world in years. Enter affable ex-bouncer Vin Diesel, powering a new franchise as Xander “XXX” Cage, an extreme-sports junkie with worldwide underground acclaim. Recruited by a National Security Agency bigwig (Samuel L. Jackson), XXX is just the man needed to infiltrate a Czech anarchist group who listen to a lot of Rammstein. Blink once and you'll miss a segue between this blockbuster's over-the-top action sequences-this is definitely James Bond for the Xbox (XXXbox?) generation, although our bad boy is too busy blowing shit up to be suave with the ladies, including sultry Asia Argento in a near-thankless role.
The Disc: Director Rob Cohen's audio commentary won't wow you as much as the parade of production featurettes, covering preproduction, postproduction, and every particle of matter in between. All the standards are here: deleted scenes, storyboard comparisons, visual-effect how-to's, trailers, and, oh, looky, a bland music video by Bush's also-bland frontman, Gavin Rossdale.
