The Movie: Ably delivering the prerequisite buff bikini babes and intense Hawaiian surf scenes, Blue Crush exceeds expectations with its fleshed-out characters and postfeminist (if somewhat predictable) plot. Our hero, Anne Marie (Kate Bosworth), is a lean, mean surfing machine, training for the upcoming Pipe Masters competition. As her stress mounts, she quits her demeaning hotel maid gig, but not before entrancing a guest- handsome NFL quarterback Matt (Matthew Davis). As Matt tries to sweep Anne Marie off her feet, she has to decide whether to live out her princess fantasies or stay on the path to surfing glory. And while the follow-your-dreams story arc is well-worn, the surfing footage and slightly original ending more than make up for it.
The Disc: Packed with making-of shorts and bonus surfing footage, the disc provides everything the film could leave you wanting. The most interesting doc (besides the wipeout reel) shows how the production team captured the intense waves from the inside. (Hint: It involves a boogie board and a camera operator with a death wish.)
