The Movie: Shot in Seattle, the movie version of Korean-American comedian Margaret Cho's one-woman show is more thought-provoking than laugh-out-loud funny, although the largely gay and lesbian audience would probably beg to differ. Her raunchy anecdotes venture into a beyond-Sex and the City level of frankness and detail, while subtle-and not-so-subtle-undercurrents of social activism run throughout. Cho is at her best and most accessible while doing impressions and characterizations, especially of her mother.
The Disc: Speaking of Cho's impressions, the comedian provides a spot-on audio commentary in the voice of her mother, which is even more amusing after viewing the disc's deleted scenes, most of which are taken from an interview with Cho's parents, who are, amazingly enough, very proud of their daughter. Fans will appreciate a making-of doc featuring Cho behind the scenes and working on future projects, but the most satisfying extra is Grocery Store, an animated short satirizing the relationship between a Korean grocer (voiced by Cho) and her black customer.
