DVD REVIEW

Movie:

Disc:

The Movie: Introducing the crime-fighting trio's backstory at a breakneck, seizure-inducing pace (although often dragged down by gratuitously long action scenes), The Powerpuff Girls Movie is cute and sassy, and its retro-futuristic animation is visually stunning. But while the movie has a positive, girl-power message encouraging viewers to embrace their individuality, it also has a lot of violence, particularly scenes in which the girls engage in a destructive game of tag and battle the bad guy, Mojo Jojo.

The Disc: The bonanza of short-attention-span extras will appeal primarily to fans of the series, although certain sequences are pretty clever-for example, the “Extra Guy” appears at the end of the cast interviews, where we learn his scene was cut, and indeed, he turns up in the deleted-scenes portion of the DVD. Other features include character commentaries, a behind-the-scenes short, a test sequence, the director's commentary, a Ren & Stimpy- esque Dexter's Laboratory short, and four games, online trading cards, and a screensaver for DVD-ROM.
