DVD REVIEW:
Movie:

Disc:

The Movie: This picture, created by the consummate artists at Blue Sky Studios, proves that we are clearly living in a golden era of computer animation. A tale of prehistoric anthropomorphic beasts putting aside their differences to save a Neanderthal baby, Ice Age has a strong story and lovingly etched characters (voiced by John Leguizamo, Ray Romano, and Denis Leary). It is not as subversive as old Warner cartoons, and not as Freudian as Disney's, but is instead a Wizard of Oz-like journey movie with a vaudevillian's sense of timing and stunning visual taste.
The Disc: This two-disc special edition includes two shorts, one new and hilarious (Gone Nutty, starring Scrat, Ice Age's feral squirrel), and the other (Bunny) a charming 1998 Oscar winner-both of them worth the price of the whole package. And there are enough behind-the-scenes footage, commentary, and deleted scenes to constitute a veritable master class in digital animation. --H.K.
