Gosford Park
Release Date: October 15, 2002
Starring: Kristin Scott Thomas, Clive Owen, Ryan Philippe
Directed by: Robert Altman

DVD REVIEW: Repeated viewings of Robert Altman's exquisite and irreverent genre subversion are as pleasing as they are imperative — both to further comprehend the multi-character structure and to gaze deeper into the panoramic stealth of the interior shots. The DVD package offers two making-of documentaries, more than a dozen rightfully deleted scenes, and two commentary tracks, one by Altman and the other by gleefully loquacious Julian Fellowes, whose Oscar-winning script features lines of dialogue so sharp they could cut glass. Underscoring the social division between snide aristocrats and their exploited servants at an English mansion circa 1932, Altman gives himself over to British royalty (including Maggie Smith, Derek Jacobi, and Agatha Christie) and the British royalty generously give themselves over to him.
