The Movie: Jeff Feuerzeig snagged the best director award at last year's Sundance for this droll but heartbreaking portrait of Daniel Johnston, a manic-depressive singer-songwriter whose mental illness and gifted inspirations feed off one another. Like many documentaries about artists battling demons, it doesn't offer enough framework to suggest why anyone should care, but the fragile beauty and borderline exploitation of Johnston's character are made tangible here, as is the noble fortitude of his folks. The Disc: Johnston's 26-year reunion with his unobtainable and flattered muse, Laurie, is more poignant than anything in the film. Devotees will relish the commentary and his personal audio diaries and Super-8 films.
