The Movie: Between its bean-eating–and–its–discontents scene, the punching out of a horse, a gag that many presumed and still presume to be a “mongoloid” joke (it’s not), and other such outrages, Mel Brooks’s tribute to/send-up of classic westerns–cum–anti-racism parable could be tarred as the first gross-out comedy. And maybe it is, but it’s still unfailingly hilarious, and it’s practically overflowing with real heart and warmth, as opposed to the lip-service sentiment served up by subsequent exercises in poor taste. And remember: Nietzsche says, out of chaos comes order.
The Disc: The new transfer is a thrill, gorgeously reproducing the lavish Technicolor that’s been muted in every other video version. The deleted scenes are okay, but Brooks’s not-quite-feature-length commentary is as flamboyantly entertaining as the movie itself, and the new making-of doc is terrific.
