Movie: 3stars  Disc: 4stars

The Movie: Penny Marshall’s 1992 dramedy has everything: sibling rivalry, gender battles, wartime stoicism, and, oh yeah, girls in short skirts playing baseball. Its cast is a who’s who of the power and talent that would dominate the ’90s: Tom Hanks, delivering a sublimely hysterical performance as he perches on the cusp of superstardom; Geena Davis, freshly Oscar-anointed and never more pinup gorgeous; Madonna at the height of her reign over all media; and Rosie O’Donnell when she was still delivering punch lines, not being one.

The Disc: Marshall, cranky as ever, delivers a mildly amusing commentary with actresses Lori Petty, Megan Cavanagh, and Tracy Reiner. The much more entertaining making-of documentary includes on-set interviews with the cast and footage of Hanks doing cartwheels over home plate between takes. Also included is a half hour of deleted scenes, many of them excellent, that would have profoundly altered the tone of the movie if left in.
