The Rundown
Release Date: March 23, 2004
Starring: Seann William Scott, Christopher Walken, Dwayne Johnson
Directed by: Peter Berg

(UNIVERSAL, $26.98)
MOVIE: 1.5starsDISC:2stars

THE MOVIE: In a pre–opening-credits cameo, future California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger seems to pass the action-movie-lug baton to The Rock, but this bungle in the jungle isn’t nearly as fun as Raw Deal, never mind Predator. Don’t blame the wrestler or his costars; blame writers R.J. Stewart and James Vanderbilt, director Peter Berg, and the contemporary studio ethos of action movies, which dictates that every weapon used be introduced with a slo-mo flourish and that every kick be repeated at multiple angles. This works in video games—in that it gives the player a moment to breathe. In movies, it’s just frickin’ boring.

THE DISC: Extras consist of the usual “we had a great time” testimonials from one and all. It’s so blah that the main point of interest becomes the youthful appearance of director Berg, who must have a rotting portrait of himself stashed somewhere—the guy’s over 40 and he looks at least ten years younger than his thirtysomething artistic equal McG.
