THE MOVIE: Jim Carrey’s biggest worldwide hit to date, Bruce Almighty tempers his extravagant physical comedy with theological drama that’s thankfully less syrupy than an episode of Touched by an Angel. Self-absorbed Bruce Nolan (Carrey) repeatedly disses God for his professional failures, so the man upstairs challenges the bitter TV reporter to do better by temporarily bestowing him with His powers. After God gives Bruce everything he wants (to rephrase Mick Jagger), he becomes increasingly narcissistic and materialistic, subsequently alienating his practical girlfriend (Jennifer Aniston). And yes, Bruce’s divine mismanagement teaches him about humility and the power of faith. While the spirited Carrey displays genuine maturity and comedic charisma, and Morgan Freeman charms as God, one wonders if the Almighty could have granted heavenly powers to someone with deeper issues than career envy and romantic angst.
THE DISC: Besides director Tom Shadyac’s commentary, extras include goofy outtakes, a short montage spotlighting Carrey’s improvisational talents, and deleted scenes that include theological musings worthy of such a high-minded tale. Expunged moments that show Bruce connecting with his “subjects” could have made his transformation more profound.
