Daredevil Release Date: July 28, 2003 Starring: Ben Affleck, Jennifer Garner, Colin Farrell, Michael Clarke Duncan Directed by: Mark Steven Johnson
(TWENTIETH CENTURY FOX, $29.98)
MOVIE:DISC:
The Movie: Blinded in a freak accident that heightened his four remaining senses, Matt Murdock (Ben Affleck) is by day a lawyer and by night Daredevil, a superhero who kills the criminals he can’t convict in court. To explore this moral quandary, he utters lines like “Can one man make a difference? There are days when I believe, and others when I have lost all faith.” Just as one is about to lose faith in the conventional Daredevil, Colin Farrell, finally living up to his hype, pops up as bad guy Bullseye and steals the show.
The Disc: Fans of the comic book will enjoy this loaded two-disc set. “Men Without Fear: Creating Daredevil” features interviews with Stan Lee and others from the Marvel team; “Shadow World Tour” shows excerpts from the comics, then the scenes inspired by them; and multiple shorts cover the characters and the making of the film. Skip the bland audio commentary and the subtitle-like text commentary, which overlaps with the audio and often “explains” what’s obviously happening onscreen.

Our First Impression: For all the boldness of writer-director Mark Steven Johnson’s concept, he doesn’t quite have the chops to pull it off. read more
