The Next Great Video Game Movie
Video games might not consistently make the best movies, but that shouldn't keep Hollywood from mining the well.

By Paul Semel

With the release of a third Resident Evil movie and the impending arrival of Uwe Boll's Postal, not to mention films based on games like Halo, World of Warcraft, and Metal Gear Solid in the pipeline, it seems like Hollywood producers have been spending a lot of time with controllers in their hands. But for every game that gets the cinematic treatment, there are many others being ignored. Oh sure, some of them don't have real plots, or characters, or anyone playing them these days, but when has that ever stopped Hollywood before? Some of our titles might need a little work, but check out our gallery of potential blockbusters.

Message: This list was a joke right. Just another attempt to demean the potential of video games? Admittedly, almost all video game adaptations suck, but that's because people don't treat them like a serious medium. Well, surprise folks, but Silicon Valley is beginning to rival Hollywood in depth. Take these following games as examples and see their potential in comparison to your "list": Mass Effect- The epic sci-fi story centering around a young humanity's rise to power within known space in the middle of the 22nd century amidst a threat of galactic proportions. This story not only has fantastic pacing, dialogue and design, but is also an incredibly mature story with subtle comments on organizations like the United Nations and parallels to the rise of America circa the 20th century. Half-Life- Conspiracy therorists eat your heart out. This sci-fi story centered around an interdimensional invasion of Earth brings a unique setting, smart writing and paranoia to be a hit. All you need to do is give the lead a personality and its gold. FEAR- A thriller centered around an outbreak of paranormal activity through a disturbed killer and a spooky little girl. A smooth blend of Japanese horror and American action, this would be a box office hit by keeping the audience tense and excited throughout. Grand Theft Auto- Take any of the four games seriously and you'll see a surprisingly deep satire on crime throughout the century. From the deceptively formal 70s to the grungy 90s to the technologically complex 00s, this could be a witty series of films that would also be box office hits. God of War- Mix big budget, talented visual effect teams and a good writer into a film like this, you'd have an amazing piece of cinema. Centered around a reworking of Greek mythology and following the tormented life of Spartan Kratos, you would get a deceptively deep movie filled with high flying action and the great bits of nudity for those interested.
