Is Cate Blanchett the best actress working today? Hey, I’m just asking. When you look at her work in movies like Elizabeth, Veronica Guerin, The Missing, The Aviator, and Bandits, it’s hard not to be astonished by her intensity and range. With three movies coming out this fall—Babel, The Good German, and Notes on a Scandal, she’s certainly reaching for Streepdom. Fortunately for moviegoers, there’s no shortage of legitimate claimants to the mantle of best actress, among them Nicole Kidman, Naomi Watts, Gwyneth Paltrow, Julianne Moore, Renée Zellweger, Annette Bening, Hilary Swank, Reese Witherspoon, Kate Winslet, Frances McDormand, Laura Linney, Jodie Foster, and, of course, the actual Meryl Streep. Most of them have been honored in one of Premiere’s Women in Hollywood celebrations, and this year on September 20, our 13th event, we honor Blanchett, Bening, Sally Field, and Evan Rachel Wood, along with director Sofia Coppola).
