Movie Rating:

The Pitch: Brad Pitt stars as a man who is born old and ages backwards, only meeting briefly in the middle with his soul mate Daisy.

The High Points: There are no weak links in the cast, with especially good performances from Taraji P. Henson and Jason Flemyng. Naturally, Pitt and Blanchett are outstanding. Fincher's meticulous attention to detail is unerring, down to the light fixtures.

The Low Points: It's long – really long. But there's no way around it; the stunning second half isn't possible without the setup of the first. The makeup and CGI for Brad Pitt as an old/young man is somewhat distracting. Benjamin is just a little bit Forrest Gump-y, perhaps because the screenplay was written by Gump scribe Eric Roth.

PS: Bring a hanky. The tears will start falling down your face within minutes, if not sooner.

The Point?

Clearly this film had no point. Time is nature's greatest ill, perhaps? The above review certainly does not reflect its five stars.
not so much based on, but inspired by...

This film is definitely worth watching; however, if you're an F. Scott Fitzgerald fan and a fan of the story, you might find that the film version is more inspired by the story than it is based on the story. You never get a real conflict as a result of his "condition" until later in the film, whereas it's very prevalent in the story from the beginning. Some Hollywood aspects are a bit heavy-handed as well, such as the sub-plot with the mother-daughter that never delivers an important revelation-the story would have been just as captivating without it. In short, I would have loved this film had I not been familiar with the short story, but it serves as an entertaining film nonetheless.

I'm glad someone recognizes this film as one of the year's best. A lot of the reviewers seem to be missing the point. My favorite of the year so far.
