Star Trek: The Original Series: The Complete First Season [Blu-ray]
Boldly going where Star Trek has yet to go: HD!
Star Trek: The Original Series: The Complete First Season
The Pitch: A complete remastering of Star Trek's first season in HD, featuring both the original episodes and "enhanced visual effects and audio" on the same discs.
What All That Techno-Babble Means: CBS Video went in and cleaned up every single episode, even adding some updated effects to make it more like what the original creators wanted. (Or so they say.) Before you start angrily Lucas-ing their efforts, be aware that each disc still has the original episodes as well, so you can ignore the upgrade.
Haven't We Seen This Somewhere Before? Yep. These upgrades were created for the DVD release, which came out a few years ago. However, this allows you to seamless toggle between the two, which makes them a lot easier to access.
Number of Episodes: 29
Video Note: It appears in 4:3, which means the picture is in the middle of the screen with the sides cut off. It's not totally square but it also ain't widescreen.
Extra, Extra: There are around 10 documentaries/featurettes, almost all of which were ported over from the DVD/HD DVD releases. Highlights include "To Boldly Go...Season One"; "Billy Blackburn's Treasure Chest: Rare Home Movies and Special Memories"; the effort that went into upgrading the video, effects and score ("Spacelift"); "Reflections on Spock"; "Life Beyond Trek: William Shatner"; "Starfleet Access Episodes" featuring picture-in-picture interviews and pop-up trivia.
Does Blu-Ray Make a Difference? They look as perfect as a low-budget show in the 60s can possibly look. This is a Trekkie's dream, so get rid of those HD DVDs and upgrade today. All non-Trekkies feel free to ignore this and go back to getting laid and being cool.
