The 100 Greatest Movie Characters of All Time

PREMIERE celebrates the most memorable movie characters and talks to some of the actors who brought them to life.

There are plenty of things we go to the movies for: spectacle, an escape from our workaday lives, a portal into a different world, a laugh, an artistic epiphany. And then there are the people. Not the people we go to the movies with, or the people in the theater for that matter. (Hey, you in the next row—knock it off with the cell phone.) The people in the movies, conjured by an actor speaking a writer’s words, guided by a director, locked onto celluloid by a cinematographer, projected onto the screen by a beam of light. So many degrees of contrivance—but sometimes we believe in these people as much as we believe in . . . well, actually, more than we believe in that joker who’s still on her cell. For this list, we’ve shunned biopics, which begin with a filmmaker’s mission to do justice to reality. Here we’re giving priority to people who never were—but who are always with us movie lovers.

I think you should have included the Joker, but more importantly, Private Jackson and Captain Miller from Saving Private Ryan- Otherwise, great list!

update for 2009 or 2010
on June 20, 2009
I hope Premiere.com is preparing an updated list. The Big Lebowski? really? over Darth Vader? and where is Captain James T. Kirk? I had to look up that Tyler Durden character to find out who some were talking about. Ah, no, not that memorable. And here are 2 other lists more up to date: http://www.imdb.com/chart/top http://www.filmsite.org/ew100.html The main chars of these movies should be high on this list.
Spicoli

Jeff Spicoli is one of the best movie characters ever. Sean Penn set the blueprint for every surfer / stoner role which has been played since. Class

Jeez, the hype has taken over
on May 13, 2009
Jeez, what's up with all the Heath Ledger fans? Yes, Ledger did a great job as a lunatic clown in the Dark Knight, but ranking him 5th and placing him over characters such as Indiana Jones, Ellen Ripley and Hannibal Lecter is, quite sincerely, an insult. Fair enough, Ledger deserves a standing ovation for portraying such a different, twisted, evil Joker, but it seems that we've all forgotten how well Jack Nicholson did the job originally. 2 different actors, 2 different Jokers, and both of them good. Although the Joker is one of the best characters to have ever appeared on screen, I am not quite sure it is ALL because of Ledger, and if he were up there it would most probably be due to his death.

Heath Ledger
on April 15, 2009
Obviously you people that are clamoring for Heath Ledger's joker to be on here haven't seen the date that it's published- 2004!!! There are dozens of characters since 2004 that aren't on the list, first of all Jack Nicholson's Frank Costello and Matt Damon's Colin (something) from The Departed.
Response to uncalled for comment on Heath Ledger(Joker)
on April 13, 2009
Ok, clearly you are lost or you haven't seen The Dark Knight. I find it hard to believe that someone would say Heath Ledger's portrayal as the joker is not only not part of the top five best characters, but under top 100. I could clearly see him easily being put under the top 20 at most, but top 100 is just uncalled for and he deserves a better place than that. And yes I have seen Jack Nicholson's skill with portrayal as the joker and I admit it was great but Heath ledger's is better. Sorry. And just because Heath's portrayal didn't take place until 2008, and Jack's was the original doesn't make him better automatically. I demand you recount and then make this argument.
Coffey/Durden
on April 9, 2009
Clearly people have pointed out no Tyler Durden (my fave also) but no 'John Coffey' either! C'mon. (At least I did'nt see him)

how in the hell can you leave off charles laughton's performance as capt.bligh, james caan's sonny corleone or mel gibson's william wallace!!!!! gimme a break!!!!
lol
on March 7, 2009
Yeah, you people you are angry Heath Ledger's not on here kinda fail. In response to another poster, Heath Ledgers Joker is NOT one of the top five of all time. Maybe top 100. I feel like the joker would have alot less hype is Heath hadn't died. It makes the character sort of above criticism for some.
to posters with hate, you realize this list is from 2004?
on February 10, 2009
this doesn't excuse some of the choices, but it definitely is the reason the joker did not make the list. IT'S FROM 2004!!!!!! if they were able to predict his performance back then, then I'd have to question why are they only making lists like this and not doing something where they could put their cognitive powers to better use.
who the f*** made this list
on February 8, 2009
ur puttin some of the best characters up in the higher numbers and leavin characters in there that shouldnt be. what about the joker huh? he is by far one of the top five movie characters of all time

Heath Ledger as the Joker Tim Robbins as Andy Dufresne Jack Nicholson as Frank Costello The whole cast of Saving Private Ryan (only in that movie for some of them)
missed the boat

Lil Ze from City of God? No mention of Jason Vorhees or Michael Myers? John Rambo? Irwin Fletcher? Yoda? Godzilla? and really?....no Tyler Durden? ..REALLY?
Whaaa?
on February 6, 2009
Number one was predictable. Personally, I don't see why so many people rave about the Godfather. I enjoyed it, yeah, but it's by no means the greatest movie of all time. Oh, and Jack Sparrow in the 80's? You've got to be kidding me. He should at least be in the top 20.
Ridiculous
on February 5, 2009
Darth Vader permeates our culture, but he doesn't warrant even a top 10 listing? Weak.
Neo?
on February 5, 2009
I'm surprised that Jack Sparrow would make this list but Neo would not.

My thoughts
on February 5, 2009
First off, I hold none of this against you, and I don't want this to come off in a negative way, in any sense. I do commend you for what knowledge I believe you possess, as I would never expect to see The 400 Blows and The Third Man being discussed. What you appear to do is play into favorites here (Scarface? Don Vito? Jack Sparrow? I saw those coming before I even read your list). I am not saying that these characters aren't great, but the only reason, I feel, they are on your list is because they have such a hold on society's view of film. James Bond is more of an idea on paper (a character in a book if you will) than an actual character, he can't be too great if it took more than one actor to pull him off (Sean Connery was by far the best, and I have to admit Bronson is a close second. This fact also falls into the reason why I think Batman was rightfully left off your list, but I just think this was because you weren't thinking straight, and quite frankly I am appalled at the audacity you displayed in creating this list. It just seems to me, and I could be dreadfully wrong, that you are playing favorites, and for the record I am grateful that you didn't put Tyler Durden on the list because that would be succumbing to list everyone's favorite characters ( I certainly hope he wasn't a real person). I think the thing that really got me was that you put Tony Montana so high on the list (has anyone seen the original?)along with Gollum, I'm surprised Harry Potter wasn't right after him. Dr. Evil has no place at number 35 mind you). There are a few I feel you happen to have missed; John Doe (Kevin Spacey) from Seven (or Se7en). He was the most methodical serial killer committed to film. Patrick Bateman (Christian Bale) from American Psycho, again, a memorable (at least in my eyes) character who gave off and all too creepy realistic vibe. The guy did a dance before killing someone, who does that? Raoul Duke/ Hunter S. Thompson (Johnny Depp) from Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. If you are going to have any Depp character on the list I would expect this one, but again, you put the most well known person he plays. A drug crazy man living at the fall of what he believed was the American dream is a true social commentary in every sense of the word. Guido Anselmi (Marcello Mastroianni) from 8 1/2. If you mention films such as The 400 Blows I would suspect you know something about film, and I am still shocked that this person was not on the list. An embodiment of Fellini himself. El Topo (Alejandro Jodorowsky) from El Topo, the movie that started the midnight cinema craze of the 70's. A man who finds life, death, retribution and even revenge all in the same film. Frank. N. Furter (Tim Curry) from Rocky Horror Picture Show. A man not afraid of who he is (a transvestite from Transylvania) and he is about as insane as the garter he wears. This one might fall into the "well known" catagory, but he was great, and that is apparently what this list is trying to give. This one is a toss up between the Zombie and the Nazi. The two dregs of society that just keep giving and for some reason they ask for more. Even Dracula would fit into this as well. The gift that keeps on giving. Daniel Plainview (Daniel Day-Lewis) from There Will Be Blood. if you are going to have Nicolson on the list several times (in his much better, and more well known, movies) then it is almost a crime to not have this character on there. A man fueld by greed and nothing else, and I have said it before, it gives a far more believable tone that some coke addled gangster of chocolate factory weirdo (Tony Montana and Willy Wonka for those who wouldn't know). Sonny Wortzik (Al Pacino) from Dog Day Afternoon. A bisexual bank robber father of two, what isn't there to like about him? Luke Jackson (Paul Newman) from Cool Hand Luke. C'mon this one doesn't even need to be explained, the guy ate more eggs in one scene than I have in my entire life. Ash (Bruce Campbell) from the Evil Dead (and Army of Darkness) films. The man hacked his own hand off and fitted it with a chainsaw. I hate playing the "well known" card, but the guy is a hero and legend to most. Paul Kersey (Charles Bronson) from the Death Wish films. I can admit that they started to fall off in the end, but the guy is the ultimate vigilante, and Mad Max is only on your list because he is some futuristic super cop of sorts who doesn't do a thing but drive around and get shot. Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford) from Blade Runner. If you are going to have Sam Spade on this list, it should be a must to have Deckard. A alcohol fueled once-somebody-now-nobody man he portrays is taking Bogart's well known role and turning it 180 degrees. Kikuchiyo (Toshirō Mifune) from Seven Samurai. This is the one that just really upset me. Mifune is, in my opinion, one of the greatest (if not the greatest) actor of all times and this character not being on the list should be a crime. A farmer turned samurai torn between who he truly is and what he wants to be is some of the best acting I have seen in a long time. Captain John H. Miller (Tom Hanks) from Saving Private Ryan. Now, this one was a hard pick because I know he didn't do anything along the lines of the Disco (Tony Manero) or lose his first match (Rocky), but the guy was a teacher who was shoved into war and had to deal with both the conflict of the bloodiest war known to man and the chilling thought of worrying about never seeing his wife again. Tom Hanks, despite what he is turning into, can take hold of the moment in ways that cast a shade over Bogart anyday. Again, I am not mad at your list. I really do enjoy people bringing up films that not a lot of people have heard about. I do feel you played some favorites though, putting iconic figures on your list (Micheal Corleone was far greater of a character than Vito, maybe not as iconic, but far greater, and you made the mistake of putting The Godfather part 1 as your film of reference. Had it been number two I would not be saying this as he was much more predominant in that film than in the first). Also, I don't know if animals both large and small were taken into consideration. Quite frankly I think the shark from Jaws was the greatest character in that movie, and it still freaks me out to this day (and being only 19 years old and scared of water is a big thing), but Quinn was truly a great character in the film (reminds me of my late Grandfather) so I can see where you were coming from. Please forgive me if there was no order to this list and that they were just put as you thought of them. I guess I just don't like seeing Peter Lorre and Daniel Day-Lewis so far down on the list (now I'm picking favorites, shame shame). On the whole though, while I may not agree with your placement of some of these people, but I certainly am glad to see that most of them were listed.

I dont think that half of these names, more like 80% of these names are irrelavent these days. Maybe if your in your 80's and saw these films and grew up with them they would be the best movie characters, but come on. Your online, the majority of your readers are going 'who the heck are these people' and couldn't sit through watching those old movies. Not saying they are bad movies or not, haven't seen them myself, but people are used to the glint and glamor of recent movies and disagree with this list.

All the way through I thought "Good, Rick from Casablanca is high up the list." Just that one omission blows the credibility of the list. And where are Tony Curtis and Marilyn Monroe (and Jack Lemon, and Joe E Brown)in Some Like it Hot? The list is American, so no surprise that Edward Woodward (Wicker Man), Alec Guiness (half a dozen, but notably Ladykillers, Kind Hearts and Coronets, Lavender Hill Mob, Bridge on River Kwai), 'Withnail', and my second favorite film of all time, Denis Price as the 10th Duke of Gascoyne in Kind Hearts and Coronets, are all missing. So is Gerard Depardieu (Cyrano de Bergerac, 36 Quai d'Orfevres and Green Card).
