The Corman Original: TV commercial director Paul Groves ('60s counterculture staple Peter Fonda) buys acid from dealer Max (Dennis Hopper, ditto). Despite the efforts of Groves' drug buddy John (Bruce Dern), his trip goes horribly awry. But it's beautiful, man, really.
Why It's a Classic: It's a lyrical paean to better living through chemistry despite a square opening title scroll about the dangers of black market narcotics. They don't make drug movies like this anymore, mostly because they hardly made them like this in the first place.
Why It Should Be Remade: Not only would it offer modern filmmakers a chance to make a groovy period piece, it would give them the oppurtunity to visualize Fonda's internal drug experience. It's a chance to make the end of 2001: A Space Odyssey seem like a Windows 95 screensaver. And hello, it was written by Jack Nicholson!
