The Baddest Bad Guys

Some actors have made such a career out of stone-cold villainy, you just don’t trust them even at those rare times they’re actually being nice. But which actor—not counting those whose career is solely in the horror genre—has had the most evil-soaked movie resume of all?

wrong on 2 counts
on July 21, 2009
Sean Bean is not a bad guy in Flightplan and Lance Henkiksen barely has any screen time in Aliens 3 as a banged up half android that gets wired for 5 minutes to even be a bad guy
Jason Isaacs
on July 19, 2009
In addition to Brits Ralph Fiennes and Tim Roth, how about Jason Isaacs? He played Tavington in "The Patriot" and Captain Hook in "Peter Pan" He also played Lucius Malfoy in the Harry Potter movies. For that matter, how about the classics? James Cagney, Humphrey Bogart, Lee Marvin, etc.?
TIM ROTH
on July 18, 2009
Where the fuck is Tim Roth?
what about?
on July 18, 2009
Al Pacino is a villian in Scarface,The Godfather Part 2, Dick Tracy,The Recruit, Ocean's Thirteen, Righteous Kill
English guys
on July 17, 2009
Why do you always pick us Brits to play your bad guys ? Scared of the accent :) ?
John Malkovich
on July 17, 2009
Not sure if it was picked up upon. He was the bad guy in Johnny English. Willem Dafoe: Speed 2? Just cause they're bad films doesnt mean they don't count
De Niro
on July 17, 2009
Why isn't Taxi Driver listed under De Niro? Is it because so many idiots have idolized Travis Bickle lately?
oh come on
on July 17, 2009
Willem Dafoe can hardly be counted for Spiderman 2 and absolutely not 3. Dennis Hopper was not the villain in Texas Chainsaw 2, he saves the girl and everything. What about Kurtwood Smith in Fortress, where he was the villain to Christopher Lambert? And Sean Bean wasn't a villain in Ronin, he played a moron who sided with the good guys until they kicked him out. Rutger Hauer was way more evil in The Hitcher than in Sin City, in fact he's only in SC for a few minutes. Who wrote this article? Do you watch movies at all?
Sean Bean in Ronin
on July 17, 2009
?? only a wannabe bad guy
Dennis Hopper
on July 17, 2009
I thought he was a good guy getting revenge on Leatherface in Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2. Yeah, he was going after the family for killing that guy in the wheelchair and traumatizing his sister in the first movie. Kind of funny when you think about it.
Sean Bean, Flightplan?
on July 17, 2009
Sean wasn't the bad guy, he was pilot doing what was best for the safety of his passengers. Oh well . .
two missed

Where was Ray Liotta or Al Pacino or even Gary Busey? They've got heaps of turns as Bad Guys!
Lame
on July 17, 2009
No Man On Fire for Denzel Washington.
Sean Bean, Kevin Spacey
on July 17, 2009
Sean Bean wasn't evil in Flightplan. And if you're gonna include Jeremy Irons' performance as Scar in The Lion King, then you have to include Kevin Spacey's performance as Hopper in A Bug's Life.
What about Tim Curry?
on July 16, 2009
I'm trying to think of a movie where he was good....
sean bean
on July 16, 2009
sean actually wasn't the bad guy in flightplan. given the roles he usually plays in american movies it was almost a plot twist that he wasn't the villain.
You missed Frank N Furter
on July 16, 2009
What about Tim Curry Rocky Horror Picture Show, The Shadow, It, Clue, Monk etc
Rutger
on July 16, 2009
Rutger Hauer only 10 Major Acts of Villainy? Get your facts straight, he's up there with Christopher Lee (well, he hasn't played quite as much villains as Lee perhaps, but who has?)
Nope
on July 16, 2009
Sean Bean wasn't the villain in Flightplan.
Walken
on July 16, 2009
Hey you forgot about walken's bad guys in King of NEw York and at Close Range. Both characters were Psychos... Especially when he blow O'l Horatio Cane's(David Caruso) head open?! I still can't take him seriously in CSI:Miami because of that!
Responding to ummm
on July 16, 2009
willem Dafoe was in the sequels and in the end of two he is the one having the psychotic talk with his son that turns him into the goblin for Spiderman 3... Watch your movies dumbass
John Travolta...
on July 16, 2009
Is he listed for being in Battlefield Earth or for making Battlefield Earth? I think a case of villainy could be made for both...
Christopher Walken
on July 16, 2009
Pure evil in At Close Range. Can't believe that one's been overlooked here. His "coyotes" scene with Christopher Penn? Scary as hell.
no Tim Roth!!!
on July 16, 2009
Tim Roth has been a villain in SOOO many movies! Rob Roy, The Incredible Hulk, The Musketeer, Invincible, Hoodlum, The Cook the Thief His Wife and Her Lover, The Hit, Made in Britain, Planet of the Apes, The Beautiful Country, Killing Emmet Young, Vatel, Pulp Fiction (yeah I know, pretty much everyone's a villain in that one), Murder in the Heartland! That's 14 films! And he doesn't get a mention? What the HEY!
John Travolta
on July 16, 2009
John Travolta was totally a badguy in Pulp Fiction.
Kurtwood Smith in Dead Poets Society
on July 16, 2009
It is not evil to not want your son to become an actor. Some would find that quite rational. He was beyond overbearing, but hardly evil.
You got one wrong!
on July 16, 2009
Sean bean wasn't evil in Flightplan! He even tried to help Jodie Foster in the beginning.
Missed one for Max Von Sidow
on July 16, 2009
I came here to mention that you missed "Needful Things" for Max Von Sidow, but someone already mentioned it.
I don't get it?!?!?! Al Pacino?!?!
on July 16, 2009
How come You credit dafoe for three parts of spiderman and there is no Al Pacino?? 1,2,3. The Godfather series 4. Scarface 5. The Recruit 6. The Devil's advocate 7. Righteous Kill 8. The Merchant of Venice 9. Ocean's Thirteen 10. Gigli 11. City Hall 12. Donnie Brasco (draws sympathy, but still) 13. Dogday Afternoon (same thing) 14. Carlito's way (same thing) 15. Dick Tracy As You see, Pacino should be high on that list...why isn't he?
Missing
on July 16, 2009
How is Pacino not on this list?
Rutger Hauer
on July 16, 2009
Rutger hauer, I mean.. he wasn't in Buffy was he? Also, he was at his baddest in The Hitcher, that movie is fantastic. Main character goes from whiny little dude to a complete stone cold killer/badass all thanks to the menace that is Rutger Hauer.
De Niro
on July 16, 2009
What about Godfather 2, he is turning in to the best mafia don ever. Also Hopkins wasn't really "evil" in Bounty or Nixon.
To be fair
on July 16, 2009
I don't think it's biased to call Anthony Hopkins' role in Nixon evil. Whatever your opinion of the actual President, the way he was portrayed by Oliver Stone in the movie he was evil. Conflicted and human, but still doing very bad things. And I'll spot you Oliver Stone's bias. But since we're counting slimy as evil in this list apparently, how about James Woods? The Getaway (Michael Madsen's evil in that one too), Nixon, Ghosts of Mississipi, Any Given Sunday, that HBO movie where he played Roy Cohn...
Antz
on July 16, 2009
You have Christopher Walken as evil in Antz, he wasn't, Gene Hackman was evil in Antz, but you don't have that listed. Curious... and nitpicky I know, but still.
Christopher Walken + 1
on July 16, 2009
Last Man Standing, a truly under-appreciated film...
Alan Rickman
on July 16, 2009
....Do they forget about all the Harry Potter movies?....oki know, Snape isn't evil "per say"...but...he could have been there...
Kevin Spacey
on July 16, 2009
In addition to playing the villian in "A Bugs Life", he also was the villian in the thriller "Consenting Adults," although that one probably deserves to be forgotten.
DeNiro.....
on July 16, 2009
What about DeNiro in The Godfather II and Taxi Driver? Ok, so maybe in Taxi Driver he was just messed up.
Titus
on July 16, 2009
He's not really a villain... That is more Tamora and her sons. Titus just exacts brutal and bloody revenge, a tragic anti-hero.
Lance
on July 16, 2009
Lance Henriksen was evil in "Aliens 3"?
ralph fiennes!!
on July 16, 2009
schindler's list,red dragon
and Bale?
on July 16, 2009
american psycho,swing kid,shaft,public enemies,hash times:very bad guy
Lance Henrickson
on July 16, 2009
you missed 2 other movies he was bad in. Dead Man and A History Of Violence.
bull
on July 16, 2009
Kevin Spacey was not evil in A Time to Kill. He was the prosector, doing HIS JOB. I could see calling him evil if he had deliberately tampered with evidence or something, but he didn't.
Micheal Madsen is higher than 7 c'mon
on July 16, 2009
One example is the character Blood in Beyond the Law.... That was a bad mother right there.
john travolta
on July 16, 2009
he didnt play the villain in face/off, nicholas cage did. cage switches bodies with travolta who was originally the good guy
about Bean
on July 16, 2009
He was not a villain in Flight Plan
Ralph Fiennes
on July 16, 2009
Schindler's List, The English Patient, In Bruges, I mean, he's goddamn Voldemort.
Lance Henriksen
on July 16, 2009
Is so deliciously evil. I could watch him all night.
Sean Bean
on July 16, 2009
Sean Bean wasn't evil in Flightplan! WTF? He just thought she was crazy and he had every reason to but he was the villain in that film. It was Peter Saarsgard. And besides, he realized his mistake in the end and in my opinion, had the hots for Jodie. LOL
some errors...
on July 16, 2009
Sean Bean is not a bad guy in Flightplan... Also, how can you leave out At Close Range for Christopher Walken? He's far more evil in that than in King of New York.
What about..?
on July 16, 2009
J.T. Walsh? I mean, just that look he gives...ice cold evil. That speech he gives in "Outbreak" still rings in my ears. The secretive sneer he sports in "The Negotiator" is completely distrusting. Even the standard bad guy role from "Breakdown" is amped up by his cold delivery. To paraphrase another publication, the only positive thing stemming from Walsh's untimely 1998 death is that the movies are safe again.
easy sleazy
on July 16, 2009
The list is the amount of times the actor has portrayed a villain even if it was only for a minute. It also picks their most villainous roll. Take it easy with the opinions
No he wasn't...
on July 16, 2009
I'm probably not the first person to post this, but Chgristopher Lee wasn't in LOTR: The Return of the King. Gandalf casually mentions that he's no longer a threat. He may have been in the extended edition, which I haven't yet seen, but that shouldn't count as being in the movie as he wasn't seen in the finished product.
bad old guys
on July 16, 2009
Edward G. Robinson, Boris Karloff
Minor quibble...
on July 16, 2009
Von Sydow wasn't really a baddie in 'Victory'. A Nazi, yes, but a remarkably sympathetic one. Call me a pedant, but that one's got to go. (And I'd move Ming in 'Flash Gordon' up to his scariest, personally, but that's as may be.)
Willem Dafoe...
on July 16, 2009
Yes, he did die in Spider-Man, but if you actually watched the sequels, then you would know he does appear in them as a figment of his son's imagination.
Um..., con't
on July 16, 2009
Willem Dafoe died at the end of the first Spider-Man movie, but he made a posthumous appearance in Spider-Man 2, and may have made one in Spider-Man 3 as well, although I've blocked most of that movie out in my mind so I can't remember for sure.
Hopper
on July 16, 2009
Correction: Dennis Hopper wasn't evil in Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, just kinda nutty.
Dennis Hopper...
on July 16, 2009
was also the bad guy in Speed.
Check the facts Jack!
on July 16, 2009
Lance H was a bad guy in Aliens 3 as he teased Ripley on his (2nd) death bed. William Def's voice was in the other spiderman movies tempting his "son", so he was the bad guy. I think you'll find Gary Oldman wasn't in "The Firm" but Gary Busey was, he however wasn't a bad guy in it. But he was a bad guy in Hannibal.
Hardee Frickin Har
on July 16, 2009
Sean Bean was not evil - or any of evil's incarnates - in Ronin. In this film, he was nothing more than a loud-mouth faker who puked after a gunfight.
Max Von Sydow and Anthony Hopkins
on July 16, 2009
You forgot Max Von Sydows turn as the devil in "Needful Things". Also, calling Anthony Hopkins evil in "The Bounty" is really reaching and including "Nixon" just shows the incredibly bias slant of the writer of this piece.
TCM2 and Blade Runner
on July 16, 2009
Dennis Hopper fought the bad guys in Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, he was not a bad guy himself. Sorry, but had to point that out. I would also contest Rutger Hauer as being "evil" in Blade Runner. The whole point of the film is that he wasn't a rouge android gone crazy, but a sentient being fighting for his life.
Lee van Cleef
on July 16, 2009
He should definitely been on this list, just for the Good the Bad and the Ugly! That was one bad man!
Kevin spacey
on July 16, 2009
What about A Bug's Life? Wasn't he the baddest of all?
Daniel Day-Lewis
on July 16, 2009
How about Bill the Butcher and Daniel Plainview?
William Smith
on July 16, 2009
William Smith easily competes with Christopher Lee as one of the badest bad guys around. He almost always plays a bad guy and has been doing it for decades. And even when he plays a good guy, he's still a major bad ass. Failing to mention William Smith is a huge omission.
jeremy irons
on July 16, 2009
you missed his baddest role scar in Lion King
Hell yeah Gary Oldman!
on July 14, 2009
I'm a huge fan of pretty much all of the actors listed, but none of them have an artistic impact onscreen quite like Gary Oldman. He simply gets overlooked all too often. In Bram Stoker's Dracula, just listen to his reading of the invitation to Keanu Reeves' character. That alone is beyond badass.
Kurtwood Smith...
on July 14, 2009
...should be bumped up a notch if we count television. Though surly, he wasn't quite a villian on That 70's Show, but he WAS a villian for a two-part Star Trek: Voyager episiode.
Um...
on July 14, 2009
Willem Defoe played the Green Goblin in the first Spiderman. If you will recall, he had his jet board rammed down his gut at the end of the film, which would make it very difficult for him to reappear in both of the sequels.
The best batman villain
on July 13, 2009
Jack Nicholson was also the (best) joker in batman. You forgot about that.
Baddest guy on film is . . .
on July 13, 2009
Clint Eastwood Not the villain, but certainly the "baddest!"
Bad guy list
on July 13, 2009
Freddy Kruger is coming for you! Nightmare on Elm st 2010 ya baby. Cant wait to see that movie
Forgot one for Max Von Sydow
on July 13, 2009
He was very sinister in Needful Things. Should bump him up a bit.
Alan Rickman
on July 13, 2009
He also played Rasputin... who was somewhat of both the hero and villain of that movie.

Max Von Sydow was also in a little movie called Needful Things where he played the goddamned devil, I think that should be credited to him.

Robin Williams as a Villain
on July 13, 2009
What about Robin Williams? Okay, ignore the Genie and Patch Adams (*shudder*). He has only had about 5 villain/antagonist credits, but each one of them have been truly remarkable in my eyes. What about his terrifying role in Dead Again? The first time I saw him as a serious actor, it was in this bizarre past-life thriller. And while Derek Jacobi was the central villain, Robin Williams stole the show, playing a disturbed ex-psychiatrist, who'd had his license revoked after sleeping with his patients. He was so bizzarly frightening, in fact, that he asked NOT to be credited at the end of the film.
One you missed...
