OUR TAKE: The New Season of 24 Is Running Out of Ideas...Already

Perhaps Jack Bauer spent the two-year break due to the writers strike watching action flicks because the first four hours of the new season played like a greatest-hits of two Die Hard sequels, Panic Room, and The Bourne Ultimatum.

Rip-Off #1: Die Hard 2: Die Harder
In Die Harder, highly trained soldiers jack into the tower a Dulles Airport, which allows them to crash planes by fooling the pilots into thinking they're the tower.
On 24, terrorists have a special box that can override all major government systems, which allows them to crash planes by jacking into control towers and fooling the pilots. Almost crash two planes at JFK to prove a point.
Rip-Off Meter: Friggen Blatant. That's the entire plot of the movie. The only thing worse would be if Jack got on a bus that had to stay about 50 MPH.

Rip-Off #2: Live Free or Die Hard
In Live Free, cyber terrorists have the ability to control all major utilities in the US, shutting down transportation, power, water. The one thing they can't control? That snarky Mac Guy.
On 24, they still have that box that can not only jack into towers (not nearly as dirty as it sounds), but it can also turn off all the power.
Rip-Off Meter: Medium Blatant. Terrorists always want to turn off the power, but coupled with the airplane thing, it's clear someone's been watching the Die Hard series on Blu-ray as much as we have.

Rip-Off #3: The Bourne Ultimatum
In Ultimatum, our favorite super assassin is trapped on the roof of a parking garage. To escape he jams the car into reverse, bends down over the passenger seat, and goes over the edge. He runs away shaken up but with minor injuries.
On 24, Jack's stuck in a parking garage helping his undercover buddy escape. He's pinned down so he breaks into a car, hot-wires it, jams it into gear, and goes through a pillar and over the edge. Of course, he's fine.
Rip-Off Meter: Friggen Blatant. If you're gonna steal from Bourne, make sure it's not a stunt so big it was even featured in the trailer. (40 second mark of the video below.)

Rip-off #4: Panic Room
In Panic Room, Jodie Foster and her daughter run into a panic room to stay safe from burglars. The bad guys try everything to get them out, including pumping in noxious fumes.
On 24, Jack's kidnapping victim locks himself and his wife up in a panic room. In scenes for next week, Jack's crew is pumping noxious fumes in there.
Rip-Off Meter: Borderline. Panic rooms aren't new and it's understandable why a major politician would have one in his residence. (Especially if Jack's in town.) But when the former African president and his wife ran in there, leaving Jack and company freaking out, it felt a lot like David Fincher's thriller. If Bauer is sporting cornrows like Jared Leto, then we'll bump this up to "blatant rip-off."

We still enjoy the show -- at least until they start revealing a new mole every week—but we're already a little skeptical about this season. What's your take? We being too harsh on the show or are there other rip-offs we're missing? Tell us now! We're doing our job! We're running out of time. Damn It! (Beep...Beep...Beep...)

Yeah, you are quiet hard on 24

Let's be real, almost every show and/or movie has blatantly copied bits from another movie or shows Creativity went out the window years ago. Please tell me a show that's been released in the past 10 years that's original. Please, I'd love to see it. Thanks, DJ
Fox TV: "24" still going strong
on January 20, 2009
I agree that Jack Bauer will probably never die. Heck the tv ratings are doing so well. However, if you have been folowing the show for more than three years, then I would listen to your suggestions. I haven't seen all episodes, but think I have a good handle on the overview www.mediametropolis.com/tag/24 At this point, I still think people are being too harsh, but I can see why you feel this way.
A Formal Reviewer's Take on Seaon 7 of "24"
on January 19, 2009
We've been reviewing 24 formally for three years now, and while I remain optimistic and hope for the future of the series, the fact is that we're getting much of the same profile for the series wrapped in kind of the same clothes. I still find it incredible, that will all the writing, stories, potential plot points and real-life craziness that we can't anticipate something completely original from this show. As a reviewer and fan - I demand it. The investment in reviewing a show like this, or TERMINATOR, or any other starts at 24x42 minutes. When you add in formal review (whether it be written, podcasted, videocasted, whatever) what rises to the surface is an expectation that I think the writing staffs completely forget out. /me crosses fingers for Season 7 Mike Wilkerson 24Podcaster - 24Podcast.Com
Dammit!

I'm still skeptical of this season as well. The first 4 episodes of last season were terrific, and then the next 20 episodes turned it into the worst season so far. These first 4 were okay, but nothing great. If it can stay mediocre I'll be pleased. It's hilarious that after all the "we moved it out of LA and there's no more CTU!", they just put Jack in the FBI and make the FBI EXACTLY the same as CTU.

But you can't kill Jack... they have tried before, and he always comes back to life... Jack would kill everyone first :)
get real...

24 has been out of production for almost 2 whole seasons. I know the whole writer's strike would have slowed things down a bit...but there has been time to come up with many different ideas. Honestly, what do you expect for a 7th season? I guess they could go the Prison Break way and just redo every season...
Minor nitpick

Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) is not Reagan National. Washington NAtional Airport was renamed Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) in 1998.

I wrote some (semi-spoiler filled) reviews of the premiere night event on my blog and touched on exactly these topics (specifically the similarities to Die Hard 4 and Bourne Ultimatum). My review of the first night, my review of the second night is the following blog post. http://psyrixx.psyjnir.org/blog/2009/01/11/24-season-7-episodes-1-and-2/

The show is still awesome. Yes, sometimes they'll take some things from movies, maybe not on purpose, but it still kicks ass. And Jack Bauer >>>>> Jason Bourne
Dulles

Washington DC's Dulles is still Dulles International airport. This was the setting for Die Hard 2 (worst movie of the franchise). Washington National airport was renamed to Reagan National airport.

This season is sad...

I watched the first season, and then let it go. Found it on hulu again, and I watched the first 2 hours. I think you are spot on. Die hard was too widely watched to rip off _that_ blatantly. The tech is so fake, it ruins the plot. A magic box that hacks any government computer through the super secret firewall... sigh... It really felt like they ran completely out of ideas. Or maybe the found out their original script was "borrowed" from somewhere else, and had to come up with something in a few hours. Quite predictable, unoriginal, very little suspense, this time.
We've seen it all, you can't blame them.

It's difficult to take the article seriously when you can't even get basic facts straight. National airport was renamed after Reagan. Dulles is still Dulles. http://www.mwaa.com/

I think you guys are being harsh, you can reinvent the wheel, there are so many flims & TV shows that do the same.... ER/Greys/Eli Stone/Jag/CSI blah blah blah etc all these shows work the same....they all ripoff each other with plots, love affairs, cases etc etc... 24 is entertaining and has some surprises and at the end of the day is all fun....... That's the only great surprise the show has left. Everything else has been done 100 times already. But, still I watch...
