Movie Stars Who Die the Most

Reaching the top of the Hollywood totem pole usually means you play the hero, get the girl, and ride into the sunset. But sometimes, you don’t even make it to the final fade out.

***Possible Spoilers Ahead***

Mostly Unscathed

Will Smith (2 Deaths)

Death Toll: Seven Pounds, I Am Legend
Close, But No Flatline: Smith “died” temporarily in Hancock, but was revived – therefore, it doesn’t count.

Harrison Ford (2 Deaths)

Death Toll: The Mosquito Coast, What Lies Beneath
Cheater: Ford was made immortal (albeit briefly) in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.

Mel Gibson (3 Deaths)

Death Toll: Mrs. Soffel, Hamlet, Braveheart
Glutton for Punishment: Although he only notched three deaths, Mel’s torture numbers are bigger: Lethal Weapon, Conspiracy Theory,Braveheart, Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome, Payback.

Tom Cruise (4 Deaths)

Death Toll: Taps, Vanilla Sky, Collateral, Valkyrie
Death Before Dishonor: Cruise’s most violent offing was definitely Taps. At the end of the movie where he played the military academy hothead, he lost his shit, opened fire with an M-60, and got thoroughly perforated by National Guard artillery. (“It’s beautiful, man!”)

Check the Pulse

Robert Downey Jr. (5 Deaths)

Death Toll: Less Than Zero, Natural Born Killers, Richard III, The Gingerbread Man, U.S. Marshalls
Doppelkiller: Downey was killed – by himself – in The Singing Detective, but it’s a hallucination sequence.

George Clooney (5 Deaths)

Death Toll: Return to Horror High, Red Surf, The Perfect Storm, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, Syriana
In the Can: Although Clooney notched a couple of early B-movie deaths, his character actually survived in Return of the Killer Tomatoes.

Denzel Washington (7 Deaths)

Death Toll: Cry Freedom, Glory, Heart Condition, Malcolm X, Fallen, The Preacher's Wife, Training Day, Man on Fire
Count It: We gave Denzel half an entry for both Heart Condition (he played a ghost) and The Preacher’s Wife (he played an Angel).

Dead and Loving It

Christian Bale (8 Deaths)

Death Toll: Anastasia: The Mystery of Anna, Henry V, The Secret Agent, Mary Mother of Jesus, Shaft, Harsh Times, The Prestige, 3:10 to Yuma
Dual: Bale got to have it both ways in The Prestige. Those who saw it know what we're talking about.

Dustin Hoffman (9 Deaths)

Death Toll: Midnight Cowboy, Who is Harry Kellerman and Why is He Saying Those Terrible Things About Me?, Lenny, Death of a Salesman, Billy Bathgate, Hook, Wag the Dog, Perfume, Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium
Most Creative Death: In Hook, Hoffman was eaten to death by a reanimated crocodile.

Jack Nicholson (9 Deaths)

Death Toll: Easy Rider, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, The Passenger, The Shining, Batman, Hoffa, Mars Attacks!, The Departed, The Bucket List
R.I.P.: Nicholson’s deaths all tend to be horribly violent – shot to death, dropped from high places, beaten to death – with the exception of The Bucket List, where his character was beaten to death with a bucket. Or so we heard.

Al Pacino (9 Deaths)

Death Toll: Scarface, Dick Tracy, The Godfather: Part III, Carlito’s Way, Donnie Brasco, Insomnia, People I Know, The Recruit, Righteous Kill
Funny How? Al has twice been killed by comedians (John Leguizamo in Carlito’s Way and Robin Williams in Insomnia).

Brad Pitt (9 Deaths)

Death Toll: A River Runs Through It, Kalifornia, Legends of the Fall, The Devil’s Own, Meet Joe Black, Troy, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, Burn After Reading, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Nice Try: Brad “died” in two additional movies: Cool World and Fight Club. But in one he’s instantly revived as a cartoon and in the other he never actually existed.

Johnny Depp (9 1/2 Deaths)

Death Toll: A Nightmare on Elm Street, Platoon, Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare, Ed Wood, Dead Man, The Astronaut’s Wife, From Hell, The Libertine, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (This one gets a half because he comes back to life in the third movie.)
Red Sea: Johnny holds the honor of bloodiest death on this list – in his debut movie, he played an Elm Street teen who was sucked into his bed by Freddy Krueger and turned into a giant plasma fountain.

Bruce Willis (11 Deaths)

Death Toll: Billy Bathgate, Mortal Thoughts, Death Becomes Her, Twelve Monkeys, The Jackal, Armageddon, The Sixth Sense, Hart’s War, Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle, Sin City, Grindhouse: Planet Terror
Till Death…: Bruce was killed twice by his ex-wife, Demi Moore (Mortal Thoughts and Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle).

Robert DeNiro (14 Deaths)

Death Toll: Bloody Mama, Bang the Drum Slowly, Mean Streets, Brazil, The Mission, Cape Fear, This Boy’s Life, Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, Heat, The Fan, Jackie Brown, Great Expectations, 15 Minutes, Hide and Seek
You, You’re Good: DeNiro was killed by Pacino in Heat, and Pacino was killed by DeNiro in Righteous Kill.

Gary Oldman
on April 27, 2009
Now I expected Gary to be on this list I swear he turns movies down if he lives, well maybe not but look at this list of movies he dies. The Unborn Sid And Nancy Prick Up Your Ears JFK Dracula Immortal Beloved True Romance The Professional Air Force One The Fifth Element Quest For Camelot Lost In Space Hannibal State Of Grace The Firm Backwoods and Harry Potter That is 17 movies without delving too deep into every role he played, and also his false death in Dark Knight, and in Scarlett Letter his character died in the book but he survived in the film so he lucked out once. He can't even survive a video game role in True Crime: Streets Of LA Gary is the best actor ever without a doubt but the worst survival rate.

Public Enemy - Hail of Bullets Angels With Dirty Faces - Electrocution The Roaring Twenties - Hail of Bullets The Fighting 69th - Shot in War 13 Rue Madeleine - Allied Bombing of Nazi Building where his character is being held prisoner. White Heat - Exploding Gas Tanks Man of a Thousand Faces - Cancer I'm sure there are one or two others. But then the OP probably is way, way too young or ignorant or both, to include any of the really great actors!

Gerard Butler (10) Death Toll: 300, PS I Love You, Timeline, Laura Croft 2, Reign of Fire, Jewel of the Sahara, Attila, Dracula 2000, Tale of the Mummy, Tomorrow Never Dies -- there may be more. Typecasting: Going out having your way with a camel or billed as "Leading Seaman" will undoubtedly lead to casting as Somali pirate.

Gary Oldman?! Almost every movie he dies.
Gary Oldman
on April 26, 2009
I agree with the person who posted about Gary Oldman who dies in most films he's in! Prick up your Ears, Rosencrantz and Guildestern are Dead, State of Grace, JFK, Dracula, True Romance, Leon, Immortal Beloved (though I can't remember if its shown onscreen), The Fifth Element, Air Force One, Hannibal, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Backwoods. That's 13 and those are only the ones I've seen/remembered him dying onscreen...I'm sure there are more. I also think that he has some of the most memorable deaths: blown up, eaten by boars, shot in the crotch, hanged, hanged by a parachute then pushed from a plane...etc.

Christopher Lee
on April 26, 2009
What about still active Christopher Lee? 10 consecutive deaths only as Dracula; plus deaths in sagas such as James Bond, Star Wars, Frankenstein, Fu Manchu, several non-continued horror stories (The Terror of the Tongs, The Skull, Dr. Terror, etc), and I don't remember if he died in The Three Musketeers, but I think he died indeed. Lord of the Ring does not count; Saruman never dies on-screen in the main release. He even said, when he did Rings and Star Wars Episode II, he felt strange watching a movie in which his character survived.

okay, so Johnny Depp didn't die in Ed Wood. yes Ed Wood died eventually but not during the movie. it only stated his death in the credits
John Wayne - Actually 8 deaths
on April 25, 2009
The previous poster, obviously, is too young to know that the Duke actually died in 8 films. The 3 mentioned,Shootist,Cowboys and Valance. However, there was also the Alamo (everybody died),the Sea Chase (down with his ship),Sands of Iwo Jima (Jap backshooter),Wake of the Red Witch (another sea death), and the Fighting Seabees (very large explosion). Most of these films were probably made before a lot of your readers were born.
Jack Nicholson...

A few more suggestions
on April 25, 2009
Liam Neeson is by far the most death addicted actor of all of these. I can't think of any film he's been in where he survives. Billy Connolly (noteworthy for being perhaps the only person to die in a muppet movie!)
Brazil?!?
on April 25, 2009
Robert DeNiro didn't die in Brazil! Unless you watched the crappy "Love Conquers All" version, his "death" was in dream sequence.
Bruce Dern
on April 25, 2009
This man does his best work while we sit back and see him die in 90% of his work. God knows he deserved more thaan half of them ( character choice alone). He's already cheated death twice on "BIG LOVE". He'll get his Osscar yet, but Postumustly , no doubt.
Michael Shanks

OMG how many times has he died on Stargate SG-1?! They didnt mention any tv stars.
Clint Eastwood.....

Amazed he hasn't been mentioned in the list. Until Gran Torino he had only died in two films; Honky Tonk Man and Beguiled
No love for Chow Yun-Fat?
on April 25, 2009
He has about a 50% survival rate, although I guess he's not Hollywood enough. Here's a short list...A Better Tomorrow, The Corruptor, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, The Killer, Pirates of the Caribbean 3, City on Fire (that was the one that Tarantino borrowed the storyline for Reservoir Dogs).
Brad Pitt
on April 25, 2009
Whoever wrote this inane comment should be shot - brad pitt on April 24, 2009 1. to person who said pitt dies in interview with a vampire, he doesnt the guy who interviews him does though and 2. wheres titanic and romeo and julliet he died in those 1. Brad Pitt DID die in Interview With A Vampire... How do you think he became a Vampire? And 2. He was neither in Titanic nor Romeo and Juliet, that was Leonardo DiCaprio. Who should be on this list because of those two as well as Blood Diamond.
Mickey Rourke

Is killed in just about every movie he does!!
Talking about SMG
on April 25, 2009
... besides those three deaths (Scream 2, I Know What You Did Last Summer, Grudge 2) she has at least three on-screen Buffy the Vampire Slayer-deaths.
Will Smith
on April 25, 2009
Not sure, someone correct me if I'm wrong, but doens't Will Smith die in Six Degrees of Separation? Just a thought.
Steve Buschemi

Bruce Willis
on April 25, 2009
Bruce does indeed die in The Sixth Sense. He is shot by Donnie Wahlberg's character, but we are then tricked into believing he survived.
Death is unavoidable
on April 25, 2009
Whether they die on screen or not, everyone dies eventually, even made up characters. Therefore, only the actor with the most amount of credits wins. I only say this because a lot of these deaths are only implied and not actually seen in the movie.
Jack Nicholson...
on April 25, 2009
Did I miss something??? I thought Morgan Freeman died in "The Bucket List," but Nicholson lived? Correct me if I'm wrong...
Depp in Platoon
on April 25, 2009
I'm pretty sure you only see Depp's character wounded. Once the medevac comes, you don't see him again. It's ambiguous, at best.
Deniro dying in Mean Streets
on April 25, 2009
I dont believe it was specifically shown whether Johnny Boy (Deniro's character) actually dies at the end of the film. I believe you see him holding his ear from a bullet wound. It is left pretty ambiguous whether he and Keitel actually die from the shooting.
Corrections
on April 25, 2009
John Wayne also dies in THE ALAMO It is indeed Dustin Hoffman who dies at the end of MIDNIGHT COWBOY. Jon Voight survives.

If we are just naming off actors who have died, I say Chris Rock Dogma, Nurse Betty, Down to Earth
Dafoe!
on April 25, 2009
Has the most on-screen deaths of any actor ever!
Gerard Butler
on April 25, 2009
I don't know if anyone has mentioned him, but what about Gerard Butler? He dies all the time in his movies: 300, Dracula 2000, Lara Croft 2, PS I Love You, Attila, Timeline, Reign of Fire... And that's just off the top of my head. Maybe he's not a big enough star for this list...
Al Pacino
on April 25, 2009
Technically the character he played in Donnie Brasco was not killed. I know the movie implys that he does get killed but the real life character he portrayed was intercepted by the FBI before he could be murdered, so that one should not count.
Bruce Willis
on April 25, 2009
You do see Bruce Willis die in the sixth sense. Its at the start after an ex-patient breaks into his house and shoots him.
Jeffrey Dean Morgan

I totally expected to see Sean Bean's name at the end of this list. There's a web list dedicated to all the films he's died in, for cryin' out loud!
Gerard Butler
on April 25, 2009
I don't know if anyone has brought him up yet, but Gerard Butler dies a hell of a lot in his films. He dies in Attila, Dracula 2000, 300, P.S. I Love You, Reign of Fire, Lara Croft 2, and Timeline, just off the top of my head. I'm sure there are more. Maybe he's not a big enough star for this list...
SAMUEL L JACKSON
on April 25, 2009
SAMUEL L JACKSON -Lakeview Terrace -Kill Bill -Star Wars Episode 3 -Basic (You see his character die, but he is alive at the end) -Deep Blue Sea -Jackie Brown -One Eight Seven -Hard Eight -Fluke (the character he voices dies, but is then reincarnated) -Jurassic Park -Jungle Fever -Goodfellas I'm sure there are at least one or two more where he gets killed off he had like 10 movies between Goodfellas and Jurassic Park where he played small roles that were likely killed, but not important or memorable. He should be on the list, regardless
Gary Oldman
on April 25, 2009
Oldman did not die in Sid and Nancy, at least not on-screen, and he didn't technically die in Lost in Space either, the SpiderSmith died but original Smith is still alive at the end of the film. But he does die in most of his films - Also died in Backwoods, Prick up Your Ears, State of Grace...I count at least twelve deaths, def worthy of mention here.
Groundhog Day..
on April 25, 2009
How many times does Bill Murray die in Groundhog Day..? At least enough times to learn to play that piano piece at the end of the flick.. There you go.
WRONG!
on April 25, 2009
Depp doesn't die in Ed Wood and Deniro doesn't die in This Boy's Life!
movie deaths
on April 25, 2009
There's also Gerard Butler. 300, Dracula 2000, Reign of Fire, PS I Love You...
John Wayne - 3 deaths
on April 24, 2009
He made tons of movies, but only died in three....The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, The Cowboys (which ranks up there with Lonesome Dove as one of the greatest westerns ever made)and The Shootist (which was his final movie).
MEAT LOAF
on April 24, 2009
It's a RARE occasion where Meat Loaf (Aday) does NOT die. From Rocky Horror's reanimated corpse of Eddie to MoH: Pelts, more often than not, Meat doesn't make it to the finale. His survival list is WAY shorter. And I had to laugh at his recent appearance on "House" as "Eddie", where he began as a dying man, but wound up surviving, but losing his wife, who caused his initial illness.
SMG died in at least 3
on April 24, 2009
Of course, no other actress was listed in this list. But, "I Know What You Did Last Summer", "Scream 2", and "The Grudge 2". Those were all horror movies, so maybe not counted? But, hey, they seem to count Will Smith.
Kevin Spacey
on April 24, 2009
Seven, American Beauty, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil,....what else??
Bruce Willis - The Sixth Sense
on April 24, 2009
The comment was films in which actor's characters die, which mush have a "death scene" or some acknowledged that at some point in the film the character was alive. In The Sixth Sense Bruce Willis was a ghost (e.g. not alive)from the start until the end, therefore this does not count.
seriously though
on April 24, 2009
Vanilla Sky. Tom Cruise ain't dead. It's not even possible that this is a misinterpretation - the ending of the film is remarkably clear on this point. That said, it's also the opposite of a big deal.
Harry Dean Stanton
on April 24, 2009
Here's a guy who has had some major death scenes (poor guy): Dillinger (wow!), The Missouri Breaks (Brando does him in wearing a dress), Straight Time, Alien, Escape From New York, & Wild At Heart to name a few.
Five (at least) for Gerard Butler
on April 24, 2009
Mr. Butler has a decent score among the films of his I've seen…Dracula 2000, 300, P.S. I Love You, Reign of Fire, Attila and Lara Croft: The Cradle of Life.
Chris Elliott
on April 24, 2009
Chris Elliott dies many times on GET A LIFE. Where's the love?
Who's the idiot...
on April 24, 2009
Who first couldn't spell CASINO, not CASSINo & secondly said DeNiro dies, some people must think they're so great to post & feel good but get it so wrong they actually look like DELIVERANCE Iq-types. DeNiro is saved in the explosion by the metal plate in the car and in the end is a bookie once again... dumb-ass
Kevin Spacey
on April 24, 2009
I've been bored and have seen him die atleast twice today.
Most deaths in a film
on April 24, 2009
Lon Chaney, Sr. died in over 3o movies.
Another Depp mistake...
on April 24, 2009
In Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare, Depp isn't technically a character he's just makes a brief cameo in a dream sequence. Just because Freddy hits him in the head with a frying pan doesn't mean he died. He wasn't even real. And ok Ed Wood might have died in real life but he didn't die in the movie. You need someone to check your list before you submit!
Pitt in Meet Joe Black
on April 24, 2009
If I remember correctly: guy gets hits by bus -> Death takes over body -> gives body back to previous owner at very end of the movie. So the character's death is just temporarily and therefore doesn't really count.
Robert Redford has died in a lot of films. Can't believe he was not on the list.
on April 24, 2009
Just to name some that come to mind: Out of Africa, Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid, The Last Castle, The Clearing, Up Close & Personal, The Great Gatsby.
Stars who die the most
on April 24, 2009
A more interesting question is what star has killed the most people in the movies? How many did John Wayne gun down? What about Clint Eastwood?
What?! No Willem Dafoe?!
on April 24, 2009
No disrespect for the others on the list, but look at Dafoe's track record of deaths on film; Platoon, The Last Temptation of Christ, Speed 2: Cruise Control, eXistenZ, Shadow of the Vampire, Spider-Man, Once Upon a Time in Mexico. Can't think of any others, but he musta died in them too.
No Tom Hanks?
on April 24, 2009
I am immensely surpised that Tom Hanks is not in the "Most Unscathed" section. Deaths: Philadelphia, Saving Private Ryan, Road to Perdition, and that stupid remake of The Ladykillers. Unofficially: Technically he doesn't die in in A League of Their Own, but if you include the passage of time....
Robert Downey Jr.
on April 24, 2009
Didn't Downey's character in "One Night Stand" die of the AIDS virus? Wouldn't that count?
Kevin Spacey?
on April 24, 2009
I swear, Kevin Spacey has died more than any other leading man I can think of... Beyond the Sea, David Gale, American Beauty, Se7en, L.A. Confidential, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, A Bug's Life... that's seven of them just off of the top of my head. It would also be interesting to assess the number of deaths per star as a percentage of their total screen roles (or screen and tv if you count both).
brad pitt
on April 24, 2009
1. to person who said pitt dies in interview with a vampire, he doesnt the guy who interviews him does though and 2. wheres titanic and romeo and julliet he died in those
Last I heard
on April 24, 2009
Willem Dafoe had the most on screen deaths of any actor. This list fails. So many non deaths listed.
jack nicholson
on April 24, 2009
You left our Nicholson's Joker from the original BATMAN movie. That makes 10 deaths for him.
Most Deaths by an actor
on April 24, 2009
Don't forget Scottish actor Tony Curran. I think that his character has died in 4 or 5 movies. In Underworld: Evolution, Flight of the Phoenix, The magical legend of the leprechauns, Blade II and Gladiator. And most recently, but that was in the TV show Medium, his character was shot but he invades Alison Dubois dreams or nightmares !
Chritian Slater??
on April 24, 2009
Where is Slater on this list? That guy hasn't survived a movie since Broken Arrow.
Sean Penn
on April 24, 2009
Where's Sean Penn
What about Danny Trejo?
on April 24, 2009
He's been killed off in almost every movie he's been in.. But maybe he doesn't count because he only plays small bitparts for the most part..
Heath Ledger
on April 24, 2009
Heath Ledger has at least 3 deaths from 'The Patriot' 'Monster's Ball' and 'Ned Kelly'.
Liam Neeson at 15 by my count
on April 24, 2009
Liam Neeson's characters have died 14 times so far, and Lincoln will make 15. He has a lot of ambiguous deaths, too: in Narnia, of course, the Lion dies & is resurrected. In High Spirits he's a ghost who seems to relive his death every night; and in Batman Begins, he dies but R'as is immortal. And in Sweet As You Are, he is HIV-positive and doomed, although still alive at the end of the show.
In Vanilla Sky
on April 24, 2009
Tom Cruise doesn't die at the end, he jumps fro the top of the building so he can awake to reality
srsly? Sean Bean
on April 24, 2009
He's died in almost EVERYTHING he's been in
Jack Nicholson as one more!
on April 24, 2009
He dies twice in Mars Attacks! (once as The President, the other as the hillbilly casino owner), so it should be counted twice.
re Bill Paxton
on April 24, 2009
Uh what episode of South Park did they say oh my god they killed Bill Paxton? That's my fave show and I don't recall them ever saying that, unless it was a recent ep and I haven't seen some of the new ones b/c some of them suck.
Interview with a Vampire
on April 24, 2009
That should count as a death. You have to die before you become a vampire. It's like losing your soul before you get a law degree.
Pacino..
on April 24, 2009
didn't die in Donnie Brasco. The real Mr.Ruggerio died from cancer after going to prison for refusing to rat out the mob,and was given a 'pass' for his loyalty. The last scene was meant to make the viewer assume he got whacked but- it didn't happen.
One more for Neeson
on April 24, 2009
For years I've held he's held one of the longest streaks for possibly consecutive dead characters.
Lance Henriksen?
on April 24, 2009
The dude has died in every movie he's ever been in, and he's been in a lot more than anyone on this list! The Terminator, The Quick and The Dead, AVP, Stone Cold, Man's Best Friend, Pumpkinhead, No Escape, just to name a few he's bit the dust in...I could go on, but that's just a sampling!
Stars whose characters often end up dead
on April 24, 2009
The record MUST be held by Robert Preston, who was killed in so many of his films that somebody wrote him a song about it, which he sang on 60s and 70s TV variety/talk shows. But of course, you are too young to even acknowledge the existence of old Hollywood movies and players short of the absolutely iconic. Even so, John Wayne got killed six times and no mention here.
Sean Bean
on April 24, 2009
More often than not, that guy's toast. It's worth betting on.
DeNiro was not killed in
on April 24, 2009
Mean Streets this is stated in the director commentary, but the Jonny Boy character, although injured, does survive.
Where's Jared Leto
on April 24, 2009
He has at least 5 pretty brutal deaths American Psycho, Panic Room, Alexander...
Nicholson should have 10!
on April 24, 2009
He dies twice in Mars Attacks! (Once as the President, once as the shady casino guy)
John Travolta's died in a few too...
on April 24, 2009
Travolta's died in Phenomenon, "technically" in Michael but technically not also, Pulp Fiction, The Punisher, probably a few others I can't think of.
Check it
on April 24, 2009
Cruise doesn't die at the end of Vanilla Sky, unless the eye opening at the end is someone completely different, like Cameron Crowe dreaming of a world where the film was as appreciated as it should have been. And De Niro doesn't die at the end of Mean Streets, he's just shot. They've been banished, condemned to hell, thus all the red, not just for violence and blood but for damnation, which is worse than death, which is the point of the film to a certain extent.
Tom Berenger
on April 24, 2009
Don't forget this terrific actor. Darn it...he dies in a lot of his movies.
What about steve?
on April 24, 2009
I don't know the exact count, but Steve Buscemi has died in quite a few movies.
Have you met Joe Black?
on April 24, 2009
Brad Pitt's intial character dies in Meet Joe Black, but is brought back in the end, so 1/2 a point for that? He also actually plays Death in that movie. How does that figure into his tally?
?
on April 24, 2009
No love for Michael Biehn?
Liam NEESON!!!!
on April 24, 2009
Krul Star Wars Episode 1 Batman Begins Kingdom of Heaven Gangs of New York Micheal Collins and there must be more.........
What about
on April 24, 2009
Sean Bean?! Alan Rickman?
Of course Pitt dies in IWTV....
on April 24, 2009
"Brad Pitt does NOT die in Interview With The Vampire." You DO understand what a vampire is, right, and how someone becomes one?
DiCaprio
on April 24, 2009
Leo has to be on this list. 7 screen deaths: Critters 3, The Quick and the Dead, Total Eclipse, Romeo + Juliet, Titanic, Blood Diamond, and The Departed.
WILLEM DAFOE
on April 24, 2009
Platoon, The Last Temptation of Christ, Shadow of the Vampire, Spider-Man, The Black Widow, etc.
What about Gerard Butler?
on April 24, 2009
Dies in P.S. I Love You. Dies in 300. Grave is shown at the end of Timeline. Dies in Dracula 2000. Dies in Reign of Fire. Died as Atila. Died in Tomb Raider 2. And (if I remember correctly, it's been a while) he is shot by his daughter in Please! That's 8 that I know of. And while I have seen tons of his work, I definitely haven't seen them all.
Robert Downey Jr. and Brad Pitt
on April 24, 2009
Downey, Jr.'s character "Lionel" also commits suicide in Fur, the Diane Arbus (imaginary) biopic movie he did with Nicole Kidman. Brad Pitt's character's "body" in Meet Joe Black is killed at the beginning of the film, because Joe needs to borrow a body, but he (well at least the body)is brought back to life at the end of the film.
Willem Dafoe
on April 24, 2009
I thought Willem Dafoe had the record for the most onscreen deaths. Platoon, The Last Temptation of Christ, Speed 2: Cruise Control, eXistenZ, Shadow of the Vampire, Spider-Man, and Once Upon a Time in Mexico...to name a few.
What a strange list
on April 24, 2009
I believe Lee Marvin made the entirety of his early career out of on-screen deaths from 1955's VIOLENT SATURDAY (An Amish Farmer-- Earnest Borgnine!-- runs a pitchfork into Lee's Back), to Budd Boetticher's great Western SEVEN MEN FROM NOW, to THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERY VALANCE, to Don Siegel's THE KILLERS--
Most character deaths
on April 24, 2009
You forgot Bill Paxton, he seems to die in just about everything he's in.
The Busc
on April 24, 2009
How the hell can you have a countdown like this and not mention Steve Buscemi? He's died in dozens of movies, found at least 10 just scanning through imdb
movie deaths
on April 24, 2009
Has anyone ever matched the number of times Elijah Cook Jr.? Almost every movie he was in. He was in MANY.
Pacino dies in Brasco?
on April 24, 2009
Pacino is alive and kicking at the end of Donnie Brasco I do believe. I'm also pretty sure Steve Buscemi has died over a trillion times on film.
Smith???? Cruise???
on April 24, 2009
Gary Oldman, Leonardo DiCaprio and Samuel L. Jackson should certainly have been on the list over such “often almost/but rarely actually dies” as Will Smith and Tom Cruise – Although Oldman does not die in Lost In Space. I also think you should give Robert Downey Jr. at least another ½ for his death (not seen but subtitled) of old age in Chaplain. BTW “depp's deaths,” Depp does not die in Edward Scissorhands (still in the tower making snow)
Vanilla Sky
on April 24, 2009
Tom Cruise did NOT die at the end of "Vanilla Sky". He chose to wake up from the cryogenic sleep he was in and rejoin the real world. His jumping off the building was just symbolic of him leaving the fantasy world and waking up in the real one.
Steve Buscemi
on April 24, 2009
My wife and I always "bet" whether he'll live or die whenever we're watching a movie with Steve Buscemi in it. He's awesome and always seems to get these roles where he's in grave danger...
Gerard Butler!
on April 24, 2009
For the first part of his career, the joke was that he died in EVERYTHING. Dracula 2000, Attila, Reign Of Fire, Tomb Raider 2, Timeline, Phantom of the Opera, 300, P.S. I Love You, just off the top of my head.
Gerard Butler?
on April 24, 2009
His character dies in most of his movies, I can remember at least 5 times: 300, Reign of Fire, P.S. I love you, Lara Croft 2, oh and that awful Dracula 2000.
I count eight for...
on April 24, 2009
Warren Beatty. Bonnie and Clyde, McCabe & Mrs. Miller, The Parallax View, Heaven Can Wait (twice), Reds, Bugsy, Bulworth
seriously?
on April 24, 2009
gary oldman's died about 17 times that I know of! wats wrong with u people?
DeNiro and Depp
on April 24, 2009
Depp doesn't die in "Ed Wood" and Martin Scorsese himself said that all three characters survived at the end of "Mean Streets", that includes DeNiro.
Brad Pitt
on April 24, 2009
DOES die in Interview w/ a Vampire. You have to die in order to become a vampire!
Al Pacino
on April 24, 2009
He died at the end of The Godfather III, at least on the dvd I have.
What about Leo DiCaprio?
on April 24, 2009
Titanic, Romeo & Juliet, The Quick & The Dead, The Departed, Blood Diamond (I think) There might even be a few more that I can't think of.
Nicholson should be 10
on April 24, 2009
Nicholson plays two characters in "Mars Attacks," both of whom die.
Mr. gravel voice...
on April 24, 2009
My gosh! Lance Hendrickson every time practically! (Which sucks.)
samuel l jackson deserves it
on April 24, 2009
you forgot the spirit, lakeview terrace, kill bill, jackie brown, deep blue sea, as well as the others
Liam Neeson
on April 24, 2009
You could also count him as someone who plays a father or father figure the most ;) Star Wars Episode 1 Narnia (with ressurection) Batman Begins Krull Schinlder's List Kingdom of Heaven Gangs of New York Fallout 3 Les Miserables He has a healthy number of deaths indeed
De Niro
on April 24, 2009
Its a complete assumption to say De Niro's character died in Mean Streets. As a matter of fact, I believe Scorsese said that he didn't die. To the person who posted that De Niro died in Casino, watch the movie again. De Niro's real-life character in the movie is living on Miami Beach right now.
fail
on April 24, 2009
robert deniro doesn't die in brazil!
Nicholson dies twice in Mars Attacks
on April 24, 2009
He played two characters - Vegas casino owner, and President. Both bit it.
No Women?
on April 24, 2009
Really? There are tons of actresses who have died in films many times. And what about Meryl Streep??? Meryl Streep: 9 (Sophie's Choice, Silkwood, Ironweed, Defending Your Life, Death Becomes Her, The House of The Spirits, One True Thing, The Manchurian Candidate, and Lemony Snicket)
Death list
on April 24, 2009
What about Ernest Borgnine...he probably died 20 times. He even is implied to have died on The Simpsons.
Re: Johnny Depp
on April 24, 2009
He doesn't actually die in Once Upon A Time in Mexico - he picks himself up off the ground and is later seen walking away at the end.
Umm..
on April 24, 2009
Witches of Eastwick?? Nicholson dies.
there is more.
on April 24, 2009
Michelle Rodriguez aways dies in her films and TV series. She should be included on this list too!
depp's deaths
on April 24, 2009
Johnny Depp is still alive at the end of "Once upon a time in Mexico" and is never actually alive, although immortal in "Edward Scissorhands". he doesn't die in "Ed Wood".
How can you not include...
on April 24, 2009
Bill Paxton and Sean Pertwee?! They've both made careers out of dying on camera!
List counts only if
on April 24, 2009
You were born in the last 10 years. A few names to note; Steve Buscemi, Ron Jeremy, that guy who no one knows and wears Red on Star Trek... I am thinking the researcher got to 10 on his digits and forgot he had toes that could help keep count as well.
Depp
on April 24, 2009
Depp's Lerner didn't die in Platoon. Sheen's character carried him from the jungle to be choppered out. "Don't leave me man", last line he utters, then that's the last we see of him. Wouldn't consider that a death. Seen it 5 million times.
Where are the women?
on April 24, 2009
Is it that only men can be film stars, or only men can die?
I'm with the Sean Bean folks
on April 24, 2009
Sean dies in so many films - much to my chagrin.
Brad Pitt in Interview With The Vampire
on April 24, 2009
Brad Pitt does NOT die in Interview With The Vampire.
Jack Nicholson
on April 24, 2009
What about Jack Nicholson in The Witches of Eastwick?
What about Bill Paxton!?
on April 24, 2009
Ok, granted he might not fit the superstar actor level of the others on the list, but still? Even South Park acknowledged that almost all of his characters are prone to dying by honoring him with the "Oh my God, they killed Bill Paxton!" line. Spells immortality that one.
al pacino
on April 24, 2009
just realised he didn't die in dog day afternoon. my mistake!
+1 for al pacino
on April 24, 2009
al pacino also dies in dog day afternoon
Uuuuhhh...
on April 24, 2009
LEO.
Jack Nicholson
on April 24, 2009
Jack also (kind of) 'died' in The Witches of Eastwick, though I suppose one could argue that the devil can't die and only just takes on different incarnations.
pacino
on April 24, 2009
didn't he die in a dog day afternoon? Also, Jack did die in cuckoos nest. Chief suffocated him with a pillow.
Sam Jackson
on April 24, 2009
I count at least 3 deaths; Jurassic Park, Deep Blue Sea and Revenge of the Sith.
EPIC
on April 24, 2009
FAIL!
I agree...
on April 24, 2009
You totally should have had Liam Neeson on this list. It's rare if he DOESN'T die in a movie.
DeNiro didn't die in "Mean Streets", either...
on April 23, 2009
He was shot in the neck, but walked away after the car wreck. This list is garbage.
stars who die
on April 23, 2009
Sean Connery!!??
not to be ridiculous, but...
on April 23, 2009
Johnny Depp did not die in Platoon. His character was wounded, sure, but he was helivac'ed out. In the novelization of the film, they explain that he did, in fact, survive.
2 movie deaths
on April 23, 2009
r we forgetting MARY-LOUISE PARKER SEEMS I REMEMBER HER DYING IN BOYS ON THE SIDE AND FRIED GREEN TOMATOES
Chuck Norris
on April 23, 2009
Contrary to a previous post, Chuck Norris did die in one of his movies. The only man who could kill Chuck Norris was Bruce Lee, in "Return of the Dragon."
Hmm...
on April 23, 2009
Not sure if memory serves me right here, but does Christian Bale die towards the end of "Swing Kids"?
Sean Bean!
on April 23, 2009
You're missing Sean Bean! Sean Bean!!
Bill Murray dies at least 7 times in Groundhog day.
on April 23, 2009
Shot, stabbed, hung, electrocuted...
Denzel
on April 23, 2009
The orginal timeline version of Denzel's character in Deja Vu was killed. That should be worth at least half a point.
DeNiro in Brazil
on April 23, 2009
He doesn't die in Brazil. He's literally swallowed by paperwork, but it's just part of Jonathan Pryce's hallucination. There's nothing to suggest that he died in the reality of the film..
LEO
on April 23, 2009
I second the Leo remark. That guy dies in almost every movie he's in.
Not exactly A list...
on April 23, 2009
But a personal favorite... Michael Wincott. He dies in pretty much everything he's in. Top Dollar in The Crow, Guy of Gisborne in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, Rochefort in The Three Musketeers, and Armand Dorleac in The Count of Monte Cristo to name a few. Always plays a great villain, always ends up on the slab XD
Clint Eastwood?
on April 23, 2009
or john wayne? does this not count these actors?
Gary Oldman
on April 23, 2009
Now he dies in every movie! He died in Sid and Nancy, Dracula, Air Force one, Harry Potter, The Fifth Element, The Dark Knight ( only for 20 minutes ) The Professional, Lost in Space, JFK, True Romance,Hannibal, Immortal Beloved. I think its harder to think of a movie he's in where he doesn't die !
depp's deaths
on April 23, 2009
Didn't Johnny Depp also die in Once Upon a Time in Mexico and in Edward Scissorhands? That would make it 11 and a half deaths.
Where's Sean Bean?
on April 23, 2009
His villains die all the time!
Ed Wood
on April 23, 2009
I don't think Depp dies in Ed Wood.
WTF?
on April 22, 2009
This Boy's Life for De Niro---when did he die? Did we see the same movie? Someone mentioned Mel Gibson's appearance in Gallipoli--his friend died. Mel survived his friend in that movie. Mel is racing to deliver a message and doesn't make it in time and his friend rushes out with the soldiers on the front line and gets tossed.
Jack Nicholson does die in One Flew Over
on April 22, 2009
He's smothered by the big Indian dude with a pillow after he gets the lobotomy. Kind of a euthanasia thing.
SEAN BEAN
on April 22, 2009
What the heck???!!! Sean Bean has died in like over 20 movies!!! Golden Eye, Patriot Games, The Island, LOTR... just to name a few...
Where's Winslet?
on April 22, 2009
Through some unfortunate timing on my part, I saw Kate Winslet die twice in the same week. A quick IMDB search and I can count 5 deaths. Give a girl some credit!
Gary Busey...
on April 22, 2009
Is pretty much Dead Man Walking in every one of his movies. Oh, and also in real life.
Nicholson does die in One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest
on April 22, 2009
To all those saying Nicholson doesn't die in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest-you are wrong. Yes, he is given a lobotomy, and then the Chief smothers him with a pillow (a mercy killing from his point of view) before he uses the water fountain to break out of the hospital. It's just one of the greatest death scenes in one of the greatest movies ever. Get with it folks.
will smith and de niro
on April 22, 2009
will dies in 7 lives and de niro in cassino.
Leo has...
on April 22, 2009

"Did Mel Gibson's character...
on April 22, 2009
...(Frank Dunne) die in Peter Weir's 1981 Gallilipoli?" Nope - He became a runner. Won't spoil the rest in case anyone hasn't seen it (terrific movie). "Denzel actually has one more, he dies in Touch of Evil in his attempt to kill the demon Azazel. Otherwise great list!" It was called "Fallen" in the US. Was that an alternate title overseas?
Glen Close ...
on April 22, 2009
where are the ladies?
Gerald Mohr
on April 22, 2009
I would like to put forward Gerald Mohr (www.geraldmohr.biz) as the radio, film and TV star who died most often for the cameras. I have a certain 46 times between film and TV guest star appearances, not to mention the number of times he died on radio shows of the 1940s/50s - probably the same amount again!
Owen Wilson and Rutger Hauer
on April 22, 2009
Owen Wilson not so much anymore, but he died in several films in a row around the time he did The Haunting (can't remember off the top of my head - Armageddon, Anaconda, I think) Rutger Hauer is in a bazillion movies, and as far as I can remember, he's died in almost all of them. Great list! I enjoyed it!
Vanilla Sky?
on April 22, 2009
Technically that wasn't a death because it is how he wakes up. If other movies didn't count because the character comes back, can Vanilla Sky really count?
Tom Cruise
on April 22, 2009
Correction - Tom does NOT die in vanilla sky. Open your eyes...
Come on people
on April 22, 2009
Nicholson did die in "Cuckoo's Nest" (mercy killing by the Chief), Hoffman did die in "Midnight Cowboy" and DeNiro did not die in Taxi Driver. How fun to read an article filled with nothing but spoilers!
Denzel Washington +1 - Touch of Evil
on April 22, 2009
Denzel actually has one more, he dies in Touch of Evil in his attempt to kill the demon Azazel. Otherwise great list!
sam jackson

Nicholson
on April 22, 2009
Jack Nicholson DOES die in OFOTCN - he is lobotomized and then suffocated by the Chief. But what about Witches of Eastwick - shouldn't he get at least a half a point for that?
Hey Leo - you need to rewatch The Beach.
on April 22, 2009
I know, it's hard to watch any Leo movie to the end, but he survives in the Beach. Goes home and everything. He does die in a number of his movies, though.
Jack Nicholson
on April 21, 2009
He did die in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, at the end. His friend smothered him with a pillow.
Mel Gibson
on April 21, 2009
Did Mel Gibson's character (Frank Dunne) die in Peter Weir's 1981 Gallilipoli?
jack nicholson
on April 21, 2009

Christopher Walken
on April 21, 2009
Up until recently, (like in the past five years) Christopher Walken has died in almost every single movie he was in and a lot of plays too. There are at least 12 movies and 2 plays where he dies in them. Got to be mentioned somewhere
Denzel.
on April 21, 2009
Technically Denzel died in Deja Vu. but due to a time paradox, it worked out.
Jack Nicholson
on April 21, 2009
Didn't die in Cuckoo's Nest. He was given a labotomy.

Tom Cruise never died in Vanilla Sky. He froze himself.
Chuck Norris
on April 21, 2009
Chuck Norris never has and never will die in any movie or in real life!
you seem to have forgotten
on April 21, 2009
Robert also dies in Fur, In Dreams, Zodiac, Richard III and his near death in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. So it's really about 9 and 2 1/2's if that makes any sense.
Samuel L Jackson
on April 21, 2009
How the heck did you miss Samuel L Jackson, with by my count 14 detahs?
Leo
on April 21, 2009
How could you forget Leonardo DiCaprio??? not only is he a bigger movie star than most of those you mentioned, but he's actually died quit often in his movies. Titanic, Romeo and Juliet, The Quick and The Dead, The Beach...just to name a few.
Um, hello?
on April 21, 2009
Leonardo DiCaprio?
Denzel in Deja Vu
on April 21, 2009
At least in that particular possible universe that was shown in Deja Vu, Denzel did die - well future Denzel that is but past Denzel lives. I suppose that should count for something
DeNiro
on April 21, 2009
Didn't DeNiro die in Taxi driver too?
bucket list
on April 21, 2009
wait didn't nicholson live in bucket list?
Meet Joe Black = 1/2 death
on April 21, 2009
According to your criteria (coming back from dead = 1/2 death), then Brad Pitt only has 8 1/2 deaths. The original "Joe" comes back at the end of 'Meet Joe Black.' The "Death" character who took Joe's place simply returns to where he came from. Good article.
Dustin Hoffman
on April 21, 2009
Chalk up one less for Mr. Hoffman, as he did NOT die in "Midnight Cowboy." It was Jon Voigt's character who died at the end.
Denzel
on April 21, 2009
In Deja Vu doesnt he die in the end to break the cycle?
Missed one...

on April 21, 2009
Where is Charlton Heston in this list. He seemed to die in every film I ever saw him in, and I include Bowling for Columbine!
Dustin Hoffman died in Perfume.
on April 21, 2009
Death count should be 10. If you haven't seen it, check it out. Not a chick-flick.
Missed a HUGE one
on April 21, 2009
Liam Neeson... dies in EVERYTHING he's in. It's like the producers and directors automatically cast him where they know the most violence is and the smallest chance of survival. (He's playing Abe Lincoln in "Lincoln" soon) So... Lincoln Chronicles of Narnia (he comes back) Batman Begins Kingdom of Heaven Gangs of New York Star Wars Episode I Michael Collins Schindler's List Excalibur
You missed out Sly

Sylvester Stallone dies just once - in the 1970s classic Deathrace 2000
Awesome List!
on April 21, 2009
This must have taken tons of research, so it definitely gets a thumbs up!
what about gary oldman

on April 21, 2009
Didn't die in OFOTCN. He was lobotomized.
Samuel Jackson?
on April 21, 2009
Where is Samuel Jackson? I think every move he's in he dies.

Bale Dies in American Psycho 2
on April 21, 2009
He dies in the opening scene.
you made a mistake
on April 21, 2009
Johnny Depp doesnt die in platoon, or at least you never see it. He just gets wounded and then charlie sheen brings him back to the medic... and then you never see him again in the movie.
Tom Cruise
on April 21, 2009
It's been a while since I saw it, but I'm pretty sure Tom Cruise didn't die in Vanilla Sky. He was frozen, and was dreaming for most of the movie. Then at the end he is brought back. That shouldn't count.
Don't Forget Samuel L. Jackson
on April 21, 2009
And notably almost all of them violent Goodfellas, Jungle Fever, Jurassic Park, Hard Eight, 187, Jackie Brown, Deep Blue Sea, Basic, Kill Bill (vol 2), Star Wars episode III, The Long Kiss Goodnight, True Romance just off the top of my head.
Brad did die in Meet Joe Black
on April 21, 2009
He dies, I believe by getting hit by a car, and Death takes over his body. So I guess technically he deserves 1/2 a death for that.
Denzel Washington
on April 20, 2009
Didn't Denzil die in "Deja Vu"? In the present he was in the bronco when it blew up under the ferry, and he later walks past his own body. In the opening sequence his cell phone rings, and it's coming from a body bag, proving that (as "Lost" put it) whatever happened, happened, and he died.

What about Steve Buscemi?
What about Deja Vu?
on April 20, 2009
Denzel died in Deja Vu also. True it was the Denzel from the "future," but if you're going to include Vanilla Sky and others where they didn't really die...
You forgot one
on April 20, 2009
It seems like Bill Murray ought to get top honors, just for Groundhog Day, nevermind Hamlet.
You missed one.....
on April 20, 2009
Denzel's character dies in Deja Vu..... gets blown up when he drives a 4WD laden with explosives off a barge and into a river in New Orleans. Thing is..... it was the "future" him, and the "present" him is alive and well on the shore.
brad pitts count is wrong
on April 20, 2009
brad pitt doesnt die in meet joe black. he IS death. either he was never "alive" to begin with, or he died before the movie began. either way, you messed up.
Missing a major actor
on April 20, 2009
Bill Murry... groundhog day.
Jack Nicholson deserves 10
on April 20, 2009
Twice in Mars Attacks!
Will Smith got the saft
on April 20, 2009
Will Smith didn't get counted for being revived in handcock but other acters got 1/2 credit for doing the same thing. a few other similar flaws you should be able to find yourself.
